Pettice
d. May 6, 2026
Addie Weddington Pettice, 89 of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.
Mrs. Addie Cordelia Weddington Pettice, 89, of Charlotte, North Carolina, peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 1:52 a.m., at the Hospice Center at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center.
Born on August 18, 1936, in Charlotte, NC, she was the beloved daughter of the late James Weddington and Edna McCain Weddington.
Addie Cordelia received her education in the Mecklenburg County school system and graduated from Second Ward High School in 1953. Following graduation, she attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, before returning home to continue her studies at Johnson C. Smith University.
In 1957, she married John Anthony Pettice, and together they built a loving family blessed with two daughters and one son. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and encourager who faithfully supported her husband, children and grandchildren in all of their endeavors. John and Addie Cordelia were married for 65 years until his passing in December, 2022.
Known to some as Addie and to others as Cordelia, depending on whether they knew her professionally or personally, she brought warmth, wisdom, and elegance wherever she went. She loved traveling, especially cruises, and enjoyed shopping, fashion, beautiful clothes, and shoes. She was also deeply committed to her community, serving through neighborhood and political organizations. She especially enjoyed playing cards and cherished the fellowship of a card group that met monthly for more than 50 years. Her social and civic involvement included organizations such as the Elite Ladies and Zeta Amicae.
Cordelia was known as a gracious hostess who loved opening her home to others. She could prepare a delicious meal at a moment’s notice and always welcomed family and friends with love and kindness. She was a trusted listener and often shared practical wisdom and encouragement with those around her. One of her favorite sayings was to “tithe and eat your green vegetables.”
Professionally, Addie Cordelia established a successful career in accounting. She was among the first Black employees hired at the Federal Reserve Bank of Charlotte in a role outside of house-keeping. Throughout her career, she also worked in the accounting departments of Exxon, Celanese, and the City of Charlotte.
Her faith and service to the church were central to her life. She grew up at Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was active throughout her childhood and early adult years. She later returned to serve faithfully as an usher, deaconess, and participant in numerous church ministries and organizations. She later became a dedicated member of Myers Tabernacle A.M.E. Zion Church, where she continued serving through missionary work, deaconess ministry, and various church activities. Alongside her husband, John, she helped establish a tutorial program at Myers Tabernacle that positively impacted many young people in the community.
In addition to her parents and husband, Addie Cordelia was preceded in death by her sister, Sylvia Weddington Ely
Left to cherish her memory and celebrate her life are her daughters, Johnelia D. Pettice of Charlotte, NC, and Cheryl (Nathaniel) Bitting of Raleigh, NC; her son, John (Cynthia) Pettice, Jr. of Huntersville, NC; granddaughter, Sidney Pettice of Albany, GA; grandson, Donovan Pettice of Huntersville, NC; along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure her love, wisdom, and legacy.
