Addie Mae Jones-Umphlett, born on August 8, 1925, in Perquimans County, Winfall, North Carolina, peacefully passed away on August 8, 2023. She was the beloved daughter of Hattie and Octavis Jones and the third child of four siblings born to that union. Her mother later remarried, and she was blessed with eleven more siblings.
Addie's early years were marked by her dedication to family. She attended school until secondary school, at which point she took on the responsibility of being a caretaker for her siblings. Her tireless work ethic led her to various roles, including cooking at a boarding house and serving as a chef for a judge in Perquimans County. She also worked in a warehouse in Virginia, always seeking ways to provide for her family.
In the early 1940s, Addie met and married Robert Umphlett, with whom she shared a life in Virginia before moving to West Hempstead, New York, in the 1950s. During her time in New York, she worked at what is now known as JFK Airport, ITT, and other various jobs, proving herself as a skilled and dedicated worker.
Known for her culinary prowess, Addie was an exceptional cook. She lived a simple and quiet life but was deeply loved by all who knew her. In West Hempstead, she devoted her time to caring for the neighborhood's children, often cooking for them and their families upon their request.
Affectionately known as "Nana" to everyone, Addie was a kind and generous soul. She opened her home to her siblings and their children when they migrated to New York, providing a safe haven until they could establish themselves. In the 1970s, she moved to Queens and later settled in Brooklyn, where she resided for over fifty years.
Despite her petite stature, Addie was a towering figure of discipline, always delivering guidance with love and understanding. Her faith in God was unwavering, and she extended a helping hand to anyone in need, always willing to share what she had.
In Brooklyn, Nana's home became the heart of the family, and she was truly the matriarch. Her generosity knew no bounds. Her reputation as an avid giver and the hub of her family's gatherings will forever be cherished.
Addie Mae leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth. She is survived by her cherished children: Mary, Odelia, Robert and Roscoe. Her son Johnny Ray predeceased her, leaving behind a lasting void. She is also survived by her two brothers, Linwood and Booker T. (Marion "Ann"); two sisters, Doris Jean (George) and Susan; ten grandchildren (Jonathan Ray predeceased her), eleven great-grandchildren, nine great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
Addie Mae's absence will be deeply felt, but her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched; may her beautiful soul rest in heavenly peace.
