Albert Alvin Jenkins was born in Vossburg, MS, on June 26, 1936, as the only child to the late Sebell (Cooley) Jenkins, d. 1998, and the late Willie Jenkins, d. 1971. Albert "Al" transitioned the earth on September 24, 2021 to experience everlasting life in our Father's house.
Early in life, Al was a member of St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Vossburg, MS. He graduated high school from Harris High in Meridian, MS and attended Kentucky State University. Al's love of music led him to begin his career as a disc jockey in Chicago, IL. In his spare time, his hobbies included traveling, playing baseball, softball and tennis and he was an avid collector of rare coins and music memorabilia, including a vast collection of jazz and R&B albums.
In 1960, during one of his baseball road trips, Al met and married Josephine "Jo" (Ulmer) of Heidelberg, MS. Al and his wife Josephine moved to Erie, PA as young parents. They became members of Mt. Ebal Baptist Church, with Al becoming choir director and a trustee. Al and Jo were married for 27 years. To this union, 2 children were born, Brenda Jenkins Christmon of Charlotte, NC and LaValle Jenkins of San Antonio, TX.
Early in his career, Al worked as a sale associate, then became a sales manager at Mace Electronics in Erie, PA. During his time at Mace Electronics, he was the featured spokesperson for their television commercials and wrote op-eds for the Erie Times Newspaper regarding the newest electronics and technology for the home. Al furthered his career as an electronics buyer at Dahlkemper's Catalog Showroom, Erie, PA and K's Merchandise in Decatur, IL before becoming Vice President of Merchandising at Service Merchandise in Nashville, TN. Some of his professional accomplishments and memberships included Kiwanis Club of Erie, the Erie Jaycees, chairperson of the Art Arkelian Charity Sports Banquet and guest professor at Notre Dame University.
After his retirement, Al move to Charlotte, NC, with his wife Mildred "Millie" (Currie) Jenkins d. 2019, whom he had married in 2001. With this union he became a stepdad to Millie's four children. Al became an active member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in the Male Chorus. Always active, he was a volunteer at Charlotte Douglas Airport and continued his memberships and interests in National Geographic Society and U.S. Mint until 2019.
Al was a faithful Christian, strong professional leader, dedicated mentor to many and community activist. He was preceded in death by his parents and half-sister, Ethel Wheeler of Chicago, Il. As a loving father he leaves to honor his memory, his daughter Brenda Jenkins Christmon, son LaValle Jenkins, son-in-law Duane Christmon, daughter-in-law Deborah Jenkins, adopted daughter Delores Jenkins, grandchildren Chantal Mortezaee, Cheryl Mortezaee, Eric Christmon, and Donovan Jenkins and Goddaughter Tracy Mickel. He was also a cherished "brother" to cousins Willie Marie Terrell, Vera Ann Terrell, Rev. Christ Walker, Florida "Buck" Burns, d. 2007, Rev. Reuben (Joyce) Coleman, Juanita (Bill) Ricks and Patricia Ballard; and brother-in-laws, Rev. Cleveland (Mary, d. 2014) Ulmer, Lee (Ernestine) Ulmer, Billie (Barbara) Ulmer, Essmarie Morris, Claudia Ulmer, Walter, d. 2016 (Mary Alice) Ulmer, Mary "Lola" Ulmer; and cool uncle to a host of nieces and nephews.
