Albert Bernard
McMullen
May 14, 1944 — Aug 22, 2026
Mr. Albert Bernard McMullen, 82, of Charlotte NC passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at his home in Charlotte, NC.
Albert Bernard McMullen most often called “Mac” or “Bernard”, was born May 14, 1944 in Charlotte NC to the late Joe McMullen Sr. and Polly Louise McMullen. He had one brother, the late Joe McMullen Jr.
Bernard was a proud graduate West Charlotte High School Class of 1963. During high school he played football, but his passion was playing the bass guitar at The Historical Hi-Fi Country Club as a member of Don Albert’s Combo. During this time he also traveled with 'The Adorables" which included his high school sweetheart Naomi "Mickey" McCain. His love of music allowed him to travel and play bass guitar with Solomon Burke as well as Fats Domino, with local artists, and artists in Virginia and Georgia as well.
He married his high school sweetheart, and his daughter Shondra, whom he nicknamed 'Speedy', was born. He served in the navy for four years. After his service, he moved back to Charlotte and began a long career with the US Postal Service where he retired in 2010.
He was often recognized and appreciated for his perfect attendance with the US Postal service. He shared his love of music, sports, comics, and western movies with his daughter, Shondra McMullen Whatley and his granddaughter Neriah Whatley. Bernard never missed an opportunity to support his family in their sporting and musical activities and other various achievements. Bernard enjoyed spending time with his family and friends on any occasion. What he most enjoyed was sharing and reminiscing about the history of Charlotte’s African-American community, bowling with friends and coworkers as well as traveling. He often spoke of his time in the Navy surrounding his curiosity of mechanics and aviary. He was a man of few words, but when he did speak, his words were powerful and full of wisdom.
Bernard leaves behind to cherish his memory: daughter Shondra McMullen Whatley, granddaughter Neriah Whatley; nephews Brian Christopher Johnson; grand-nephew Brian Christopher Johnson, Jr.; grand-nieces Christina, Jazmin, and Chloe Johnson; cousins Helen Eggleston, Claude (Roberta) Boyd, Terry , Muncie (Havana), and Alice Cummings. He also leaves behind a host of other family members and friends who will remember him dearly.
