Alberta Anderson 93, of Hempstead, NY passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2025, at Brookdale Charlotte East in Charlotte, NC.
Alberta (Bates) Anderson, daughter of the late Janie (Miller) Bates and Wadie Bates, was born in Hempstead, N.Y., on June 11, 1932. She spent her youngest years living in Hollis, Queens before moving to Hempstead, N.Y., where she attended Hempstead High School. She was a member of Union Baptist Church in Hempstead, N.Y.
In 1950, Alberta married the late John H. Anderson. Through this union, they welcomed four children: three sons and one daughter, the late Barry Anderson, also known as Abdul Shaheed Rasheed Rahman, John Anderson, Jr., and Michael Anderson, and one daughter, Maureen Anderson Johnson. Alberta was a devoted mother who wholeheartedly cared for and supported her children throughout their lives.
In 1969, she began her career as a telephone operator with the New York Telephone Company. She dedicated more than 27 years of service before retiring from Verizon Communications in October 1996, to lovingly care for her mother, Janie Bates.
She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy her son, John H. Anderson, Jr.; daughter, Maureen Anderson Johnson and her husband Pete, and son, Michael D. Anderson and his wife Cynthia. In addition to her children, she also leaves behind her devoted cousins, Bobby Walker, Paige East-Lewis-Johansen, Cheryl East, Tamra Edwards, and Lauren Edwards; and niece-in-law, Alice Jayne Johnson Curtis.
Lovingly known as Nana, Boopie, Nana Banana and Nana Anderson, she will be cherished by 13 grandchildren: Petie Johnson, Dahman Anderson, Kaleb Johnson Muhammad, Chea Johnson, Jamela Anderson, Perrim Anderson, Rabih Johnson, Najee Johnson, Chasiti Anderson, Khadel Anderson, Shakoor Anderson, Michael Anderson, Jr., and Makeda Johnson, twenty-two great-grandchildren and twenty great-great-grandchildren, as well as her dear friends, Risë Heckstall, Ella Mayo, Beverly Johnson, Earl and Penny Seagle, and Georgia Duff.
Devoting her life to her family and loved ones, and grounded in her faith, Alberta was a model of love and caring, always thinking of and helping others ahead of herself. She will be remembered as a loving matriarch whose guidance, strength, compassion and many acts of kindness left enduring examples for generations to follow. Her legacy of love, resilience, and family devotion will live on in all whose lives she touched.
