Mrs. Allenia Sylvania Waddell, 61, of Charlotte, NC departed this life on Sunday, August 8, 2021 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, North Carolina.
She is the daughter of Bernice Mayes and the late David Mayes. She was born on October 1, 1959, in Charlotte, North Carolina, the younger of two children.
She attended Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, graduating from Harding University High School in 1976. Allen was known for her beauty and keen intellect, which allowed her to be runner-up in the prestigious Carousel Queen pageant. Allenia was also a Harding cheerleading squad member and concert choir member, singing as a soprano. After high school, Allenia matriculated through King's College in Charlotte.
Allenia's diverse and storied career began in luxury retail at Montaldo's and Ivey's department stores. Allenia also worked at Coca-Cola, Grub & Ellis Bissell-Patrick, Bissell Companies, and most recently, The Keith Corporation, a full-service commercial real estate firm where she served with distinction for nearly twenty years.
In her early years, Allenia was a baptized member of the First Baptist Church-West family. Later she would join by Christian experience at Greater Providence Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, usher, and scoutmaster for the church's beloved Boy Scout Troop 152. Troop 152 was arguably the most successful troop in Mecklenburg County and likely in the entire state of North Carolina due in part to Allenria's strategic direction. She coordinated the annual Trails-End popcorn sales and the "Christmas in July" event, producing record-breaking sales.
Allenia will always be known as a beacon of light. She illuminated spaces and was always willing to help others. Allenia was an excellent cook who sought first to fill your spirit before your stomach. She was a wonderful mother, aunt, cousin, and friend that found immense pleasure in spending quality time with loved ones. She was strong, nurturing, and protective over her son, family, friends, and "adopted sons and daughters." Most of all, she was a woman of God that spent her life being a blessing to others and leaving behind an incredible legacy of service and unconditional love.
Allenia was preceded in everlasting life by her father, David Mayes Sr. Left to cherish her memories are her mother, Bernice Mayes; son, Justin Waddell; brother David Mayes Jr (Wanda); Christina Mayes; and a host of extended family, close friends, and loved ones.
