Alvin Leon McKoy, "Al" 77 of Mint Hill, entered eternal rest due to natural causes on Friday, January 08, 2021 at his residence. He was born on January 21, 1943 in Leland, NC to the late Eddie Leon McKoy and the late Celia Reeves McKoy. He was married to the late Pecolia McRay McKoy on September 30, 1967 in Wilmington, NC and they remained married for 51 years, until Pecolia'a passing on April 23, 2019.
Al grew up in Leland, NC, however he graduated from Williston High School in Wilmington, NC. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree in 1964 from Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, NC. He then continued his education at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, earning a Masters of Arts in Elementary Education degree in 1973.
Al began his career as a public school teacher in 1964 in New Hanover County, NC. He moved to Charlotte, NC in 1967 and began teaching with the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. He taught at Dilworth Elementary, Bruns Avenue Elementary, Matthews Elementary, and Piedmont Open Middle School throughout his 30 year teaching tenure. He received numerous awards, certificates, and citations while working with the school system because of his sustained passion for teaching, leadership, and commitment to public service.
Al and Peco were faithful members of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church for over 50 years. He was regularly involved in a number of ministries within the church. These included Loaves and Fishes, the Jail Ministry, Nursing Home Ministry, Bereavement Ministry, Men's Ministry, and Kitchen Committee Ministry.
During their free time, Al and Peco enjoyed bowling together and were regular members of the Coliseum Bowling Lanes Wednesday Nigh Mixed bowling league for many years. Al enjoyed a multitude of other extracurricular activities and was a founding member of the Charlotte Chapter of the Fayetteville State University (FSU) Alumni Club. Not surprising, he was a regular attendee at every FSU Homecoming and CIAA Conference Basketball Tournament. He was a devoted member of Masonic Sparkling Diamond Lodge #373, having served in the capacity of Past Master, Junior Deacon, and Secretary. With respect to hobbies, Al was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening, snow skiing and water skiing. He had a entrepreneurial spirit and in the late 1970s helped co-found a small business known as A&M Tree Service. He was also an original member of the Bullish On America Investment Club of Charlotte.l In a nod to his civic duty, upon retirement, he served as a poll worker and Chief Judge for precinct 235 during local/national elections. Finally, a couple of little known facts about Al is that he contained a talent for drawing and tailoring-upon request he could produce lifelike renderings of almost any item and he could sew with the best of them on his mom's Singer sewing machine.
When previously asked "what lesson you would like to make sure your children and grandchildren learn,"Alvin replied, "be respectful to everyone."
Alvin was preceded in death by one sibling, Clarence Sneed. Known for his caring personality, Alvin will be remembered for his generosity, quick wit, integrity, honesty, and loyalty to his family and friends.
Al leaves to cherish precious memories, his two devoted children: Dr. Kelvin McKoy of Los Angeles, CA and Dr. Javonne McKoy White (Robert) of Fayetteville, GA. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Robert White III, Ania Cooper, Zion Trump, Jordyn White, Jared White, and Rylan White; and host of other family and friends.
