Amelia Parker passed away peacefully on January 13, 2021 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Amelia L. Parker was born on June 12, 1948 to the late Inez Moore Parker. She attended Allen High School in Asheville, North Carolina in the class of 1965. Upon completion of high school she enrolled in the illustrious Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina where she received her Bachelor's Degree in the Class of 1969. She was also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. She would later complete her graduate work at Iowa State where she received two master's degrees before being admitted to the Georgetown University School of Law. She served as a White House staff member during the administration of President Jimmy Carter, and thereafter as the Executive Director of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Executive Director of the Executive Leadership Council, and Executive Assistant to the Rev. Dr. H. Beecher Hicks for the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.
She was also the Executive Director at the International Civil Rights Center & Museum. Amelia Parker understood the importance of carefully transforming the three floors of the Woolworth Building into an institution that could tell the inspiring stories of the struggle for civil rights across the 20th Century. Using artifacts, documents, and images, Amelia oversaw the development of compelling storylines for visitors at the museum; creating a path for them to move seamlessly through the galleries of the permanent exhibit, "Battlegrounds". Amelia did not pretend that the struggle for civil rights was complete. She encouraged programming that connected the lessons embedded in the museum to the pressing issues of social justice today.
Amelia was preceded in death by her mother Inez Moore Parker, (Uncle and Aunt) Clarence L. Moore Sr. and Sadie Moore, (Cousins) Clarence L. Moore Jr. and Robert D. Moore Sr.
Surviving family to cherish her memories are her cousins Robert D. Moore Jr. (Janet) of Winston-Salem, NC, Clarence B. Moore and Rayner D. Moore of Charlotte, NC, Cousin Stephanie Marrow Bridgwaters of Nashville, Tennessee, godchildren Che R. Hicks, Matthew Chavis Thompson, William Woods, Cecelia Hicks Keys, Kristen Hicks and Roxie Goodman.
We would also like to thank the abundance of friends and classmates who loved and help take care of Amelia in her latter days.
