Andrea Bernadette Huff, affectionately known as "Bernie", was born on August 5, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland to Evelyn Louise Gill. She was educated in Baltimore City Public Schools and graduated from Western High School. Andrea graduated Summa Cum Laude from Gardner-Webb University with a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice. She earned a M.A. degree in Communications at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California and completed a one-year graduate fellowship in Community Development  at M.I.T. in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Andrea was the first Black female police captain of the City of Charlotte. During that time, she also served as a project director of a major research project funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice and served on advisory boards of Criminal Justice agencies through the state of North Carolina. Andrea taught as an adjunct professor at CPCC in both the Law Enforcement Technology and Communications Departments. She obtained certification as a Criminal Justice Training Instructor and delivered instruction in North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training program. Andrea was also a regional trainer for a high-tech dot.com company that used video-conferencing technology, the Internet, and satellite television technology to deliver corporate training and university curricula throughout the nation. Her last official position held was a magistrate for the N.C. Judicial System.

Andrea was a community activist and civic leader in the Mecklenburg County community. She was a member of the Executive Board of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Black Political Caucus, the Democratic Women's Club of Mecklenburg County, and a past president of the Black Women's Caucus of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. She was also a volunteer with the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives , the Southern Summit Planning Committee (a collaboration of Leadership Charlotte and the McColl Graduate School of Business at Queens University), the United Negro College Fund and helped coordinate the Tuesday Morning Breakfast Forum. In addition, she was a chairperson of the political action task force of the highly successful Charlotte Mecklenburg Women's Summit.

Andrea was appointed by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee (CRC) where she chaired the Police Community Relations Subcommittee and was a member of the CRC Executive Board until June 2011. She served as chair person of the City of Charlotte Taxicab Review Board and chairperson of the Shelter for Battered Women's Resource Committee. Andrea was also a member of the Board of Directors of United Family Services, the Mecklenburg County Juvenile Services Board, and the Mecklenburg County Domestic Violence Advocacy Council.

Andrea was an avid reader of all types of novels, news magazines, her MIT Alumni Association Magazine and she even kept a subscription to her hometown online paper, The Baltimore Sun, to stay up to date with what was happening in her family's community. She was a Computer Consultant for thirty one years. She enjoyed playing her Xbox online. She loved to "Shoptoomuch" which was her computer account name. She loved to cook and would purchase every countertop appliance and cookware and cutlery to aid in her cooking as well as subscribing to various recipe and cooking websites that helped her prepare food quickly and deliciously.

Andrea was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn Gill-Beatty of Baltimore, MD, and her sister, Darlene Beatty, of Columbia, SC.

Andrea is survived by her devoted brother, David Beatty, and sister-in-law, Robin Beatty, and their children, Leah McMurrin and Jerome McMurin; a host of great nieces, great nephews, and cousins from Maryland and North Carolina and her close lifelong friend, Marilyn Johnson.
