Andrew (Andy) Alwin Adair was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 5, 1932, to Susie Ford. He was the unexpected gift who arrived several minutes later than his identical twin brother Augustus (Gus). Several years later, he moved with Gus, and their older brother, James, to Tuskegee Institute, Alabama to be reared by their grandparents Reverend Russell and Annie Ford, where all three brothers attended Tuskegee Children's House and Lab School. Andrew and Gus had the honor of serving as drum majors with the Tuskegee Institute (now University) marching band and were also featured on Dr. George Washington Carver's Sunday morning radio program. Their performances continued during their first two years of enrollment at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where they were also members of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Andrew was drafted into the army and served in Korea. He was later assigned to Special Forces to play tennis with the Army tennis team given his outstanding skills as a player but was unable to be an official member of the team because of his race. When his enlistment was completed, he returned to Morehouse and received his Bachelor of Science degree. In his first professional role after graduation, Andrew became the first African American chemist for the Water Department in Toledo, Ohio.

While working as a chemist, he started a family and attended law school at the University of Toledo, and after graduation, was admitted to the Indiana Bar in 1971. In 1969, he began his career with the Urban League as a staff member in the Dayton, Ohio branch, transferring to the National Urban League headquarters in New York City several years later. During his many years with the agency, Andrew served as Associate Director for Programs and Field Operations, Founding Director of the Management and Training Program, acting General Counsel, and finally as Regional Director in the Central Office in Chicago, Illinois.

Following his retirement, Andrew moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where he worked as a staff associate for the City of Charlotte's Community Relations Committee. After his retirement from that position, he began serving as "Of Counsel" in the law office of Karro, Sellers and Langston. Andrew's community service included serving on the boards of the Afro-American Cultural Center, the Charlotte Urban League, and the Charlotte Symphony. He was elected by the church membership to be a member of the Pastoral Deacon Panel at St. John's Baptist Church, serving in that role from 2016-2018 and was a member of the church choir.

Andrew enjoyed cooking and planning dinner menus, building his library of literary classics and African American literature in particular, daily reading of the New York Times and Charlotte Observer newspapers, taking strolls through the neighborhood, and trying his hand at lady luck during his and Pat's annual trips to Biloxi, Mississippi. He loved watching classic movies with his family, listening to jazz, classical and broadway music, and engaging in spirited conversations with others, especially his children, about past and current trends and events. Andrew also loved watching football, cheering on his Carolina Panthers and Ohio State Buckeyes, and was an avid fan of college basketball as well, always looking forward to March Madness.

He transitioned from this life on November 22, 2021, after a long battle with cancer. Andrew is survived by his wife, Patricia Judice Adair, his two children, Andrew Adair, Jr. and Dr. Suzanne Adair, and a host of other family members and friends.
