As a young man, he married Carolyn Linder of Gaffney, SC on December 25, 1951, and moved to Charlotte, NC. Working hard, often with multiple jobs, they created a family, and together they raised five children. Andrew worked as a machine operator for most of his career, in addition to other jobs. Andrew was active in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses until his health declined.

Andrew will be remembered for his deep pride in his family, his endless generosity to help family members, and ability to imagine, design and create things with his hands including much of the furniture in his South End home, a tractor, a three-wheel scooter, and other mechanical devices. Andrew had a special love for families, babies and watching him hold and sing to his wife, children and grandchildren was a gift to all.
