Annie Mae Gray was born April 24, 1941 in Mecklenburg County. She was raised in Mallard Creek and took pride in being the oldest out of eleven. Annie attended Torrence Lytle School in Huntersville NC. She spent the next 40 years working in the Healthcare Industry (Green Acres Nursing Home, Good Samaritan Hospital, Huntersville Hospital and Sardis Nursing Home) until her retirement.
Annie was grounded in her faith; she loved the Lord and lived her life in His image. As a devoted and faithful member of Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church for over 40 years, she served on the Stewardess Board, Missionary Society and Senior Choir. Whether inside or outside of the church, her infectious laugh, witty sense of humor, fierce style, and charismatic spirit captivated everyone who knew her. Annie looked forward to coordinating her Sunday attire, from her suits, to her purse, down to her shoes and last but not least, her most signature piece, a stylist HAT! She was the one we all looked forward to seeing because her energy was always overly exhilarating and transparently genuine. Annie, "Mae Mae" as her family called her, always gave generously and wholeheartedly to her family, community and her church. Annie never had any biological children, but she was a mother to all her nieces and nephews.
She lived life to the fullest and celebrated with every fiber of her being; she was truly the life of any party! The sound of her laugh was the PARTY!! Annie loved to dance, soon as the beats started, it was like HEAD, SHOULDERS, KNEES AND TOES. To say there's no one else like Annie Mae Gray is simply an understatement. She's a jewel that we will dearly miss; one that will always live in our hearts, our minds and our spirits.
Annie is preceded in death by her parents, the late Allen Roosevelt Gray and the late Margaret Ellen Gray; late siblings, Delores Gray, Martha Gray, Herman Gray, John Gray, and Esther Gray Streater. Annie leaves three sisters, Betty Jones, Agnes Gray, Barbara Gray; two brothers, Lawrence Gray and Charles Gray (all of Charlotte, NC) to cherish her memory. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends who truly loved her. She loved fiercely and deeply and we take comfort in knowing that Annie is now at peace and reunited with her parents and siblings.
