Mr. Artis Williams was born on October 6, 1934 in Blounts Creek, NC. He passed away peacefully on July 16, 2020 with his beloved son and grandson by his side at Novant Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center.

Artis was the youngest son of John Robert and Mary Williams. He graduated from P.S. Jones High School in Washington, NC in June 1954 and then entered Bull City Barber School in Durham, NC. After graduating barber school in May 1955, Artis moved to Asheville, NC and worked at the Dew Drop Inn Barber shop.

He moved to Charlotte in June 1956 and began working at Sealy's Sanitary Barbershop. In the early 1960's, Artis worked in the Brooklyn Neighborhood on 2nd Street and the Southside of Charlotte.

In 1968, Artis stepped out on his own and opened Barringer Drive Barber Shop in Clanton Park. Barringer Drive Barber Shop became a staple in Clanton Park for 35 years.

The 2003 re-development of the Westside of Charlotte created the need for Artis to find a new location. In September 2003, Artis re-opened with a new shop named Ideal Barbershop. He owned and operated Ideal Barbershop for more than 14 years.

Artis was honored in March 2015 at the NC Master Barbers Annual Convention as a Master Barber serving the Charlotte community for 60 years. Artis has been a faithful member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for more than 58 years. He and his beautiful wife Thomasena celebrated 59 years of marriage in February 2020. Artis was always full of life and loved people. He will be dearly missed.

Artis leaves his loving wife Thomasena Williams to cherish his memory; 5 devoted children, Sandra Gail Powers, Jacqueline Williams Murphy (Octavius), Artis Redell Williams (Pamela), Deborah Polk, and Walter Hill (Janice); 6 wonderful grandchildren, Courtney, Artis Jr., Candis, Caitlin, Joy, Amber; 3 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
