Barry Quinn Avinger , 61 of Charlotte, departed this earthly life on Sunday, January 16, 2022 at Atrium Health - University after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Harry Avinger and Naomi Young Avinger, was born on June 15, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York. He was educated in the New York City Public School System. He graduated from Prospect Heights High School in 1979.
Barry joined the United States Air Force in 1979. He received several ribbons and commendations such as a Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. He was a Food Service Specialist and was honorably discharged in 1983.
In 1989, Barry was united in holy matrimony to Renee Wharton. Along with her daughter, they were blessed with three children: one son and two daughters.
Barry was employed with various companies throughout his career. Caravan Transportation, Inc., Charlotte Sanitation, and the United States Postal Service. He was employed at the USPS for 21 years before retiring in 2016.
Barry loved taking road trips, watching football, cooking and grilling, and listening to music. His greatest joy was his grandchildren. If you knew Barry, you were bound to have a good time. He was funny and always straight to the point.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his soul mate, Renee Avinger of Atlanta, GA; one son, Matthew Wharton of Charlotte, NC; three daughters, Kimberly Martin and Sarah Avinger of Charlotte, NC, Felicia Melvin of Katy, TX; one son-in-law, Justin Melvin; two grandsons, Santario Martin and Jeremiah Melvin; two granddaughters, Giselle Wharton and MaLani Avinger; his mother, Naomi Avinger of Rosedale, NY; one brother, Gerald Avinger of Charlotte; one sister, Desiree Avinger-Bradley of Cambria Heights, NY; one sister-in-law, Anita Avinger; one brother-in-law, Gregory Bradley; two nephews, Ronell and Justin Avinger; three nieces, Alysa and Bryanna Bradley and Ciera Avinger; two great-nephews, Haile Moore and Jaydin Avinger; six aunts, Giniline Alston of Rosedale, NY, Virginia Hodges of Brooklyn, NY, Verna McFarland of Columbia, SC, Mary Young of Staten Island, NY, Leola and Ollie Ree Young of Holly Hill, SC; two especially close cousins, Derrick Hodges and Darryl Fogle; and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends.
