Bettye Graham Kirkland, 77 of Matthews, NC, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 23, 2022. Bettye was born on March 31, 1945 to Arthur Lee McLendon Sr. and Sara J. McLendon and Charles Graham and Francis Bowman in Charlotte, North Carolina.
As a child, she was very involved in school activities - the Student Council, Chorus, Girls Glee Club and she was ambitious about becoming a music teacher. Betty didn't become a music teacher, but became a teacher to anyone who crosses her path. After graduating from West Charlotte Senior High School in 1962, she went on to work for GE and Citi Group. Bettye was also a Notary Public for many years.
Bettye held an interest in bowling and was on several bowling leagues; she was a regular participant of the Wednesday Night Mixer at University Lanes and also a member of the AMF Bowling Association.
In 1963, she married Aaron Kirkland, Sr. and went on to have two children, Charlette and Chris.
Anyone who knew Bettye knew the type of soul she had and they know how difficult this loss is for her family.
Bettye is predeceased by her parents, Arthur Lee McLendon Sr. and Sara J. McLendon and Charles Graham and Francis Bowman; her siblings, William McLendon, Shirley Thompson, Arthur Lee McLendon Jr., Doris Jean McLendon-Smith; son, Aaron Christopher Kirkland and grandson, Christopher Sinclair.
She is survived by her daughter, Charlette Kirkland; step children, Jeff Moss, Antwan Kirkland, Tony Belton; foster son, Dontae Duffy; godchildren, Natalie, Nicole, Nathaniel (Sanford) Kea; twenty grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; special friend, Lynn Smith; and a host of other relatives and friends.
