Catherine Tyson, 90, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Sunrise Senior Living Facility in Charlotte, NC.

Mrs. Catherine Neal Tyson, departed this life on January 18, 2026, at Sunrise Senior Assisted Living Center in Charlotte, NC. She was born on April 10, 1935, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, to the late Alonza and Ellie Weathers Neal. Catherine was one of 15 children (five boys and ten girls) born into the Neal family. The Neal family activities revolved around school and the church. Catherine attended McClintock Elementary School, a Rosenwald School in the Steele Creek Community, Sterling High School and later attended Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC. At an early age, she joined McClintock Presbyterian Church, where she remained a member for her entire life. As an active member, she was Clerk of Session for many years. She also served with the Presbytery of Charlotte. Catherine was a faithful and loyal servant until her health began to decline.

For 65 years, she was married to Saylor Eugene Tyson. As successful entrepreneurs, Catherine and Saylor owned and operated Tyson Groceries, Inc., since 1970. In her later years, she worked in sales at Tuesday Morning department store.

Mrs. Tyson was preceded in death by her husband, Saylor Tyson; her five brothers, Roosevelt Neal, Sr., O’dell Neal, Willie Lee Neal, John T. Neal, Charles Neal; and six sisters, Bessie Neal, Annie Mae Neal Mason, Paralee Neal Corbett, Lucille Neal Stewart, Sadie Neal Weathers, and Ellen Neal Smith.

Left to cherish her memory are three sons, Gary Eugene Tyson, Darryl Neal Tyson and Wayne Saylor Tyson; three sisters, Margaret Johnson, Mary Lou Harris, and Nancy Neely (Phillip), all of Charlotte, NC; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other family members and friends.
