Charles Lee Patton, 89, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at his residence in Charlotte, NC.
Charles Lee Patton was born on December 15, 1936 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and peacefully transitioned to his Heavenly home on August 11, 2026. He lived to be 89 years of age. He was the son of the late Odessa McMurray Mungo and Ransom Patton.
He grew up in the Historic Cherry Community and was educated in the Charlotte City Schools’ System, attending the historic Morgan Elementary School and graduating from the historic Second Ward High School.
After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Air Force. Charles L. Patton, affectionately known as “C.L.,” married Marjorie “Margie” Ann Funderburk, and they became the proud and loving parents of four sons: Adrian, Gregory, Myron, and Reginald.
“C.L.” accepted the Lord into his life, was baptized, and became a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church at a very early age. His love for the Lord was exemplified through his service as a Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, and member of the Senior Ministry. He was blessed with a beautiful tenor voice and loved to sing, lending his voice over the years to the Pleasant Hill Junior Choir, Men’s Choir, and the renowned Adult Choir. He received numerous recognitions and awards including being recognized for “His Loyal and Dedicated Services” by the Men’s Choir. As well, he and his wife, Margie, a self-taught pianist, passed on their love of and gift for music to their sons who, at an early age, formed a harmonizing group, later becoming the “Patton Brothers.”
Throughout the years, some of his places of employment included Southern Warehouse, Axton Cross Chemicals, Worth Chemicals, Continental Chemicals, and Safeway Transportation. “C.L.” was one of the proud members of the Wednesday Morning Breakfast Group (W.M.B.G.) and received several awards, including recognition for his “Outstanding Service as Secretary and Financial Secretary.” He was also an avid golfer, and loved a good game of Spades and Bid Whist, especially the “bragging rights” after the win. His love for the “Washington Redskins/Commanders,” the “Dodgers,” and the “UNC Tarheels” was incomparable. In addition to spending time with his family, one of his favorite past times was being a member of the Queen City Travelers, where he and his sweetheart, Margie, joined their friends as they traveled the world each year.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margie A. Patton; mother, Odessa M. Mungo; father, Ransom Patton; sisters, Marguerite Grier, Sarah Patton, and Mary Alice Briggs; and beloved son, Gregory Edward Patton, Sr.
He leaves behind a loving legacy, three sons: Adrian C. Patton, Sr. (Phyllis), Myron F. Patton (Dr. Sylvia), and Reginald O. Patton, Sr. (Marcella ‘Marcie’); eleven grandchildren: Gregory Patton, Jr. (Tosha), Yushonda Patton Whitehurst (Troy), Sanchez Patton, Latashia Patton, Adrian Patton, Jr. (Ortavia), Lt. Colonel Jonathan Patton, Sr. (Adrianne), Lastarria Patton Ray, Reginald Olando Patton, Jr., Mylon Patton, Alisha Patton, and Myllónne Patton; twenty-four great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; two sisters: Lena Patton Carter (Garry), and Louise Patton; daughter-in-law, Esther Patton; sisters-in-law, Juanita Tolbert, and Jean Funderburk; two adopted grandchildren: Natasha Patton, and David Patton; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
