Mrs. Clara Mildred Houston Graham was born on October 19, 1925, and departed this earth to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Odell James and Bertha Todd Houston.
Clara was educated in Rowan and Cabarrus County School Systems. She began her college studies at Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC. While attending a service at Tradd Street Presbyterian Church in Statesville, NC, she met Rev. H.O. Graham. Clara paused her education in 1948, when she married the love of her life Rev. H.O. Graham. Their union was blessed with four beautiful children whom she adored. She later completed her college education at Johnson C. Smith University in 1962. Upon receiving her degree, she began teaching at First Ward Elementary School.
She was a dedicated educator for over 25 years, teaching kindergarten through 4th grade at First Ward and Statesville Road Elementary School before retiring.
Clara grew up in Third Creek A.M.E. Zion Church in Cleveland, NC and later joined Mount Olive Presbyterian Church. She and Rev. Graham worked on the development of H.O. Graham Metropolitan Presbyterian Church. After his death, Clara joined Memorial Presbyterian Church where she served faithfully until her health declined. She was an Elder, an active member of the choir, the Senior Citizens Ministry, The Minister’s Wives Club, The Literary Club and a devoted missionary, just to name a few.
Clara had a passion for music and loved to sing. She was a frequent guest on Hour of Opportunity as well as other religious programs. She learned to play the piano by ear. One of her favorite songs to play and sing was “We Are Our Heavenly Father’s Children.” Clara would happily embrace opportunities to share her gift. She would often sing at weddings and other celebrations.
Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. H.O. Graham and her son, Harvey Odell Graham, Jr.; brother, James L. Houston; and sisters, Margaret H. Richardson, Marie H. Murfree, Hazel H. Logan, and Mary Ruth H. Roberson.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her son, B. Stanley Graham; daughters, Frieda G. McGregor (Gil) and Gayle G. Wright (Roscoe); two sisters, Pearl T. Houston, Myrl H. Thomas; brother, John Robert Houston; seven grandchildren whom affectionately called her “Mother G,” Traceé Washington, Stanley Odell Graham (Jalonda), Melody Debnam (Ray), Joi B. Ingram (Dion), Kristen G. Means (Michael), Jarrel S. Manigo and Gilbert Odell McGregor; 18 great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.
