Mr. Colton Harrison Ross Jr., 94, affectionately known as Ross, Pop, or Poppy, passed away on February 7, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Born on October 12, 1930, in Charlotte, Colton lived a life marked by service, love, and an unforgettable presence that left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

A proud graduate of the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system, Colton went on to serve in the United States Air Force for over 20 years as a medic. Rising to the rank of TSGT/E6 before retiring, he dedicated his career to caring for others with skill and compassion. After his military service, Colton continued working in roles that reflected his commitment to helping people—first as a janitor at Winchester Surgical Supply and later providing support at a boys' camp in Boone, North Carolina.

Colton was known for his towering stature and even bigger personality. His deep voice was often compared to Barry White's, and his signature greeting—"Hello There"—never failed to bring a smile. His humor was infectious, and family and friends fondly remember his unique saying, "Yes, I do not!" whenever he wanted to express disinterest in something.

Faith played an important role in Colton's life. Though he did not regularly attend church in later years, he believed deeply in God and prayed every day. His faith shone through in the way he cared for others—not just family but anyone who needed support or kindness. Colton is survived by his brother Lawrence T. Ross; children Jonathan Ross, Dewey Ross (Guya), Colette Ross, and Sheryl Ross Ely (Wendell) beloved daughter-in-law Gwendolyn Sowell (Bill); grandchildren Tawanda Haynes, Coltedra Sh'nee Smith (Eltoro), Dayuan Ross (Shequita), Aaron Ross, Tania Ross Mobley (David "Dee"), Jarrett Sinclair, Rashaun, Jaron Ross, Regan Ely, and Kendall Ely; great-grandchildren Kailee Haynes, Ayanna Hill, Kiera Ross, Dayuan "DJ" Ross, Kendrick Stroman, Ayvah Ross, Skylar Ross, Isabella Ross, Kailie Norris Ross; great-great-grandson Karim Haynes; as well as many beloved cousins, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Colton H. Ross Sr., mother Evelyn Thompson McMullen; wife Berdell Jamison Ross; grandmother, Martha Moore; Haskell Thompson; and sons Charles R. Black and Colton H. Ross III.

Colton Harrison Ross Jr.'s legacy is one of love, laughter, and generosity of spirit. He took care of so many people throughout his life—not just relatives but anyone who needed guidance or support. His memory will live on through the countless lives he touched with kindness and humor.
