Mr. Corey Ruffin, 47, of Charlotte, NC, departed this life on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House.
Corey Tobias Ruffin entered this world on September 25, 1977, in Jackson, Mississippi, born to John Ruffin and Shirley Smith Burrough. On May 14, 2025, he transitioned into eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy woven with love, leadership, and unwavering dedication to uplifting others.
Educated in the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system, Corey graduated from Independence High School before finding his second home at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). WSSU was more than an institution to Corey—it was a foundation that shaped his life. He embodied the university's cherished motto: "Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve." From 1998 to 2003, he poured his energy and passion into the campus, earning his BA in Mass Communications/Media in 2003.
Corey was more than a student; he was a griot—an oral historian, storyteller, and cultural torchbearer. His voice, charisma, and brilliance resonated across the university, inspiring all who crossed his path. As the host of WSNC 90.5's beloved Sunday night R&B show, Evening Silhouettes, his smooth delivery and thoughtfully curated playlists became a cherished weekly ritual. His leadership was undeniable—he was crowned Mr. Ram (2002-2003), led the Mozik Modeling Troupe as president, contributed to the student yearbook, and served in the Student Government Association. He was a dynamic presence in campus theater productions, a sought-after program host, and a founding member of Black Men for Change, a group dedicated to mentoring young Black men at WSSU and beyond.
As a Campus Activities Student Ambassador, Corey transformed simple moments—playing pool, ping-pong, or card games—into opportunities for connection and laughter. Through BAT Entertainment, he organized events that became legendary campus memories. But his greatest impact came through mentorship. He had an innate ability to encourage younger male students, pushing them to rise higher, dream bigger, and carry the Ram spirit with pride. Even beyond graduation, Corey remained an integral part of WSSU, continuing to give back through his work with Aramark Food Services.
Professionally, Corey made his mark in various industries. He spent years at US Airways, then thrived in finance roles at Wells Fargo, Time Warner Cable Business Class, and Citibank. His commitment to excellence and service extended beyond campus life.
Corey was preceded in death by his brother, Terrell, and his grandmother, Ernest Lee Smith.
He leaves behind a devoted family: his loving wife, Anya Ruffin; two children, Camilla Ann Ruffin and Corey Tobias Ruffin, Jr. (CJ); his mother, Shirley Burrough (John); his sister, Brittany Burrough; brothers Michael Stradford (Jenell), Travis Redmon (Kierra), Titus Haygood, and Bruce Richardson (Erica); two aunts, Maggie Smith and Elizabeth Jones (Robert); his uncle, Dewayne Smith; his mother-in-love, Annie Canty; his brothers-in-love, Derrick Hicklin (Alma) and Christopher Canty (Chanel); three nieces, Shannae Hicklin, Achsah Canty, and Crystal Canty; three nephews, Justin Francis, Anthony Massey, and Josiah Canty; and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends—including his beloved Ramily from WSSU.
Corey was light and love. To know him was to love him. His presence, his smile, and his unwavering kindness will be deeply missed by all.
