Mrs. Daisy Titus Garvin, 79, of Huntersville, NC departed this life on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC.
Ecclesiastes 3 - "For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven….
A Time to Be Born and A Time to Die...
On October 26, 1943, Daisy was born to the late Julius and Ida Mae Titus in Maybinton, SC. The youngest of five children, she was preceded in death by siblings Lewis Titus, Essie Cantey, Tommy Titus. Daisy peacefully transitioned on Sunday morning, September 17, 2023.
A Time to Search...
She attended Newberry County schools, Carver Elementary/Junior High in Whitmire, SC and graduated from Gallman High School. She moved to Charlotte, NC and received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Johnson C. Smith University.
A Time to Love...
At college, Daisy met and gained a close circle of life-long friends. One of her besties, Bettye, later introduced Daisy to her brother "Tom Berry," who became the "love of her life." They secretly courted and eloped in March 1964. To this union was born their only child, Nina. Even through times of separation and diversions of life's paths, they remained great friends. God's plan reunited this beautiful couple and their love story continued later in life. Tom and Nina provided care and concern for Daisy as her committed and loving caregivers.
A Time to Plant and A Time to Harvest...
In college she worked for her Uncle Elo Henderson with the Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian Church. She was an avid reader from childhood to her adult years. She loved knowledge and knowing. She kept herself abreast of all that was happening in and around the world.
Upon graduation, Daisy began her teaching career during the time of segregation at Gingles Elementary School in Dallas, NC, until it closed. Her teaching journey took her to Charlotte, NC to teach in several elementary schools in the CMS system for over 40 years. She served her professional organizations by being an active member and officer of NCTA and NCAE. Simultaneously, she began her tenure at CPCC teaching adult readiness classes and was a GED examiner for 30 years.
In her early years, she attended First United Presbyterian Church and after marriage, she joined Tabernacle Baptist Church in Gastonia where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and worked wherever she was needed. She later joined Galilean Deliverance Community Church.
Daisy was a snazzy dresser; her outfits, jewelry, shoes and purse always harmonized impeccably. She never missed an opportunity to plant seeds of kindness, wisdom, trustworthiness and loyalty. Daisy was a loyal and dedicated friend. She was a secret-keeper, money manager and the first to show-up for friends and family when in need. She was a woman of her word.
A Time to Cry and A Time to Laugh...
Daisy was a pillar of strength, class and dignity. She had a sense of humor and could easily make you laugh, showing those beautiful dimples. Daisy also had a serious side and was stern, direct and didn't mince her words. She believed in being punctual, at least 30 minutes early. As a wedding directress, she often told her brides that she would start the wedding with or without them. One of her sayings was "Give yourself enough time to get there." Even during her cognitive impairment, God provided humor when Daisy dressed and arrived for a doctor's appointment six hours early.
A Time to Embrace...
Daisy retired 14 years ago from CMS but continued to work at CPCC part-time. She loved spending time with her family, especially her granddaughter, Chandler, who affectionately called her MiMi. Her hobbies included making floral arrangements, Christmas wreaths, ornaments, trying new recipes and reading. She loved decorating for all the holidays.
Daisy was an excellent cook and was known for her mac & cheese, deviled eggs, congealed salad and Kool-Aid punches.
A Time to Grieve and A Time to Dance...
Alzheimer's robbed Daisy of her cooking skills, craft-making and speech, but she maintained a strong and resilient spirit and could speak volumes with her eyes, facial looks and body mannerisms. We rejoice with song and dance for the beautiful full life that she lived.
Daisy leaves to cherish her memories: her husband Tom Garvin, IV; her beloved daughter, Nina Vaughan (Bobby) of Huntersville, NC; step-sons, Tommy Garvin (partner, Kris Dobek), Treylen Garvin, (fiancé, Nitera Little) and Lamar Richardson Garvin, all of Charlotte, NC; her granddaughter, Chandler Vaughan of Detroit, MI; a bonus grandson, "BJ" Vaughan (fiancé, Eamon Crawley); three step-grandsons, Luke, Liam and Jaxson Garvin; two great-granddaughters, Chloe and Ava Vaughan of Charlotte; a sister, Sara Titus Gray of Columbia, SC; sisters-in-law, Bettye Canada (AC) of Charlotte, NC, Mamie Chisholm (Terry) of Gastonia, NC, Dorothy Farley (Jim) of Tarrytown, NY; Joyce Hoyle, Debra Hoyle; brother-in-law, Trammelle Hoyle (Eula) of Gastonia; along with a host of nieces, nephews, friends and family.
