Darryl Jennings High was born on July 23, 1961, at Womack Army Hospital, Ft. Bragg, NC, son of Mrs. Lois M. High and the late James O. High, Jr. Darryl grew up in a large military family which included strict schedules, chores, travels to different places and most importantly, Love.
Early in his life, Darryl and his siblings would live in Panama and Georgia. Although his father's job had them relocate from time to time, when anyone asked where they were from, his answer was always the same, "I'm from Fayetteville, North Carolina." For Darryl, Fayetteville was always home.
Darryl grew up with three brothers, Milton, Ray, and Greg and three sisters, Cynthia, Vonnie and Dena. In the High household, you always had someone under foot and so having your own space was a luxury. Sometimes it seemed like they could have given the Waltons a run for their money with having so many in one house. Darryl and his siblings always knew they were loved.
Darryl had a passion for Karate. Bruce Lee was amazing to him. He and his friend and neighbor Jerry Wood acted out their own Ku Fu master movie in the back yard complete with Numb chucks. Darryl also found that he loved to dance. He loved Shaba Doo and pop locking with his brother Ray. They even went so far as to perform on TV in Raleigh. He also wanted to play music so that led him to join the school band where he met Mark Smith, a guy who loved to laugh and loved music as much as he did. Darryl especially loved roller skating. He loved the music and all the friends he would see on the weekends at the roller rink.
For a short while after graduating from Terry Sanford High School, he tried out college and attended Shaw University. Although he loved the atmosphere of college, he missed home and decided he was going back to Fayetteville. But Darryl wanted more adventure, so he bought his Chrysler Cordoba and lived life. He eventually decided he wanted to see what Charlotte had to offer so off he went with his sister Cynthia only to return to his hometown Fayetteville for visits. Darryl found friends, a career in carpentry and life that he grew to love.
As Darryl began to mature, he was blessed with a beautiful daughter Rachel. She was the love of his life. Being girl dad takes a special type of man, and he enjoyed every minute of it. She filled his life with so much joy and love he never knew. Anyone who knew Darryl was going to hear about his amazing daughter, his beautiful daughter, his talented daughter, his intelligent daughter. Darryl's time on this Rock we call earth was brief, but he made everyone he knew feel cared for, special and loved. And that kind of man rare. Although he has fallen asleep in death, I know that he is safe in God's memory and no longer dealing with any health issues or stress of any kind. As we say our final goodbye to Darry J. High, know that his memory lives on through each and every one of you.
Left to cherish warm memories are his mother, Mrs. Lois M. High; his daughter, Rachel McElwain; his daughter's mother, Katie McElwain; brothers, Milton K. High, Ray A. High, and Gregory E. High; sisters, Vonnie Davis and Dena L. High; with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
