Obituary

David Young, Jr.'s life began September 27, 1940, in Florence, South Carolina. He was the second born of five children to the late David Young, Sr. and Mary Dixon Young. He attended and grew up in Cumberland United Methodist Church in Florence, South Carolina where he developed friendships and extended family relationships that lasted a lifetime.

On August 16, 2023, our beloved David began his next journey and departed this life. David knew no strangers having friends from all walks of life. Friendly, smart, full of humor, charming, and popular are some of the words used to describe him by those who knew him best. He had a keen sense of humor and a sharp mind and he honed those life skills that enabled him to take care of his family and those he cared and very generous. He became a member of Rockwell A.M.E Zion Church where he extended and nurtured relationships. He loved talking to people and being a part of his community. He was the consummate family man. He did not just play the part of father, husband, uncle, brother or grandfather, but he embraced those roles.

David was a proud alumnus of Wilson High School, of 1958, where he was a member of the 101 Wilson High School marching band. He played the cymbals and then hailed as the high stepping drum major and affectionately given the nickname "Light Weight". He attended one year of college at Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina. His career was diverse from working for North Carolina Mutual Insurance, Seaboard Coastline Railroad, an Expeditor for Ronson Hydraulics, Co. to retiring from General Tire. When opportunity presented itself, he co-owned and operated Young's Wheelchair Service with his wife from 2006-2012.

David is survived by his daughter's Traci Y. Bailey (Benjamin III), Karen Y. Kelly (Darryl); his grandchildren, Darryl A. Kelly, Devin B. Bailey and Benjamin F. Failey, IV; his two sisters Betty Ward of Florence, SC, and Mary Hattersen of Philadelphia, PA., along with a host of sisters/brothers-in law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

David's strong sense of family and faith gave him strength and purpose throughout the years. He leaves a legacy of love, laughter, and commitment to family and friends that will be remembered by all who loved him and those he loved.
