Obituary

Denise "Niecey" Willis, was born August 2, 1948 to the late Eugene George & Dorothy Shears-Willis in Detroit, MI, along with her twin sister Diane.  Denise accepted Christ at an early age, faithfully serving throughout her life. Denise grew up in Highland Park, MI, attending the public schools and graduating from Highland Park High in 1967. Upon graduation, she began working at Michigan Bell, where she remained throughout her entire career, retiring after 30 years with the company.  Dominic Antone Willis, her only child, the light of her life, was born on April 7, 1969.  Raising a son, as a single mother was a challenge that she overcame through faithful determination, trust in God and undying love.

Denise was know among the family and friends as the cool, calm, collected one.  Lifelong friend , Aleda Young, could count on Denise to be a true friend always.  Her many nephews and nieces, adored Niecey for her easy-going nature and encouraging spirit.  Most importantly, Denise stressed education and leadership to her son and grandchildren.

Denise enjoyed amateur bike riding, playing chess, and was an avid Detroit sports fan.  Niecey was very active in her local church in MI, Hope UMC, where she served in different Outreach Ministries, as well as Director of Lay Speaking for the West District of the Detroit Annual Conference.  Her commitment to service continued through her volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, The Detroit Jazz Festival and Detroit Grand Prix for many years.

Denise moved to Charlotte, NC in 2009, with her sister, Bernadine Arnold and her family, Latrisia, Nicole, Nicholas and Janelle Arnold.  Embraced by the family, including great-great-nieces, Miracle, Madison and Baby Toni. Niecey's days were filled with joy, laughter & excitement.  Denise worked at Crisis Ministry, attended the Plaza UMC making it her church.  Her grandmother Jazmine, relocated from Michigan to Charlotte to be closer to her Granny; allowing them to spend valuable quality time together.  Denise was truly happy in her new home, Charlotte, NC.

Denise Willis transitioned on Saturday, January 28, 2017, while reading her bible and daily devotion.  Survived by her son, Dominic Antone Willis and daughter-in-law Angela, grandchildren; DeAndre Marcus Cooper, Taj Malik, Jazmine Armani and Rahsan Tariq Willis, siblings; Bernadine Arnold, Clifford Willis, Diane Griffin and Elaine Willis-Poe.  Denise also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and associates with fond memories.

Funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Friday, February 3, 2017 at Plaza United Methodist Church.  Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon.
