Doleatha Goodman, 89 of Charlotte, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2020 at University Place Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was born April 6, 1930 and was the tenth child of fourteen children of John and Minnie Grier and grew up in the Hidden Valley farm area of Charlotte, NC. She was educated at Plato Price and West Charlotte Schools, which is now the Northwest Junior High School campus.
She married Johnny Avery of Charlotte and had four children, Joyce White, Brenda Jefferson, Johnny Avery, Jr. of Charlotte and Daryl Avery of Greensboro, NC.
Medea, as she was lovingly called, loved her church and was a member for over 70 years. She was a Choir member served on the Usher Board, as well as the Deacon Board. She received the Outstanding Service Award from Saluting Silent Soldiers from the church 2011 to 2013.
Doleatha's loves outside of the church were the Elks and the Eastern Star where she gave her all. In 1998, she was awarded the Elk of the Year award. She acquired knowledge and shared her new found love in her community with assisting the sick and shut-in. Her personal passion was bowling and fishing. She worked 52 years at one job that she loved at Argus Chemical Company.
Doleatha was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Goodman; five sisters, Margaret, Conolia, Bernice, Mary, Elizabeth and six brothers, Glenn, Herman, John Thomas, JB, David, James Ross and four grandchildren, Richard, Eric, Mark and Zoey.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Roberta Garnett of California; children, Joyce White, Brenda Jefferson, John Avery, Jr. of Charlotte and Daryl Avery of Greensboro, NC; ten grandchildren, Cheryl Stitt, LaVentue Scott, Carla Black, Traci Davis, Kelli Scott, Catherine Barnes, Chermere Neal of Charlotte, Jamal Avery Jhaliah Avery of Texas, Khalilah Avery of California; great-grandchildren, Courtney, Anthony, Travis, Channing, Jasma, Jamya, Ella, Power, Indigo, Jamecca and Journey Avery of Texas, Brandon Quay and Taylor Barnes; and six great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
