Obituary

Dora Mae Threatt Johnson, 84 of Charlotte, gained her wings and was called home on October 15, 2021 at Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center.  She was born September 26, 1937 and was the second child born to the late James Curtis Threatt and Mary Lee Richardson Threatt in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Dora started her education early, graduating from Petersburg High School at the age of 15.  From there, she attended North Carolina Agricultural & Technical University in Greensboro, NC where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Business Education.  After graduating, she took a position at Columbia University in New York.  Not one to sit idle, while working for Columbia University, she decided to earn her Master's Degree.  She also pursued further educational goals at Nova University in Florida.  Later, she began her career as an educator when she took a teaching position at Barber Scotia College in Concord, NC.  While teaching at Barber Scotia College, she met the love of her life, Chalmers Roscoe "Rock" Johnson.  They were married on August 17, 1963 and from that union, three children were born:  Chalmers Roscoe Johnson, II, Marc Garcia Johnson and Dorenda Elayne Reid.

After a short stint at Barber Scotia, she decided to take her talents to Charlotte, NC by accepting a position at Mecklenburg College and taught there until they merged with Central Piedmont Community College (OPCC) in 1963. From there, she really started to shine.  She was instrumental in the formation of what was then called the Secretarial Science Program.  Over the years, the name of the program changed, but Dora remained a steadfast fixture in the culture and environment of CPCC.  Supervisor, instructor, advisor, counselor, and friend, Dora did it all.  For over 52 years, she strived to enrich the lives of everyone she came in contact with at Central Piedmont.  She loved working for Central Piedmont and even after retiring, remained steadfastly involved through the CPCC Retirees Association.

Her accolades are too many to list, but among them she worked for CPCC for over 52 years; she was a steadfast member of Las Amigas, Inc. for over 50 years; a Past Worthy Matron of the Rosa M. Morris Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star; and she was involved with multiple groups including the Multiple Myeloma Support Group, 1AAP, and the CPCC Retirees Association.  On March 12, 2016, the Office of Administrative Technology Center at Central Piedmont Community College was dedicated in her honor and bears her name.

In addition to her parents, James and Mary Lee Threatt, she was preceded in death by her husband Chalmers Roscoe Johnson; her brother, Curtis Augustus Threatt; and her son, Chalmers Roscoe Johnson, II.

Dora leave behind an adoring sister, Carrie Turner of Bennettsville, SC; two loving children, Marc Johnson (Janel) and Dorenda Reid (Donovan), both of Charlotte, NC; one loving granddaughter who she reared, Alexus; three loving grandsons, Jaylen, Cameron and Christian; brother-in-law, Thomas Johnson (Deveria) of Dover, Delaware; a special cousin, Theresa Richardson of Charlotte, NC and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.
