Edith Gray Byrd was born in Cumberland County on October 20, 1946 to the late Robert Freeman and late Almeria Crouch. She was the oldest of 8 children. She married her high school sweetheart, the late Felton W. Byrd Sr in 1965. She peacefully departed this world on Saturday January 23, 2021.
In 1972, Edith moved to Charlotte where she raised her six children. She was a disciplinarian and a avid Christian. She did not miss an opportunity to share her faith with family, friends, and anyone she came in contact with.
Edith was always full of the word of God and wanted to spread his love. She made sure that everyone got a birthday card or and sent cards for special occasions.
Edith raised her children and grandchildren in Windsong Trails, where she was known as "the candy lady". She also gave adults, young and old, tracks for salvation as well as daily bread. She was a faithful member of Victory Christian Center and always willing to share her faith with others.
Edith was preceded in death exactly seven years to the date of her late husband Felton Byrd Sr, her step father William E. Crouch, her sister Phyllis Smith, niece Keisha Crouch, great nephew Benjamin Davis Jr. and son-in-law Orlando Jenkins.
Her memories will be cherished by her children, Sharon Anderson (Wilbert) of Raeford NC, Felton Byrd (Shalon), Greg Byrd(Toccoa), Denna Jenkins of Charlotte NC, Rob Byrd of Washington DC, and Damion Byrd(Latoya) of Charlotte NC.
Her grandchildren: Travis , Delsheena, Gregg, Jacques, Taneisha, Courtnay, Corie, Taylor, Treyvon, Shameria, Damion Jr., Nathan, Jerimiah, Amara, Taheer. Her great-grandchildren Amayah, Mason, Messiah, Halo.
Her sisters: Rachel (Annie) Crouch, Antoinette (Angie) Crouch of Charlotte, NC. Marie (Net) Freeman, Bernadine (Cake) Freeman- Moutrie of Washington, NC. Her brothers Kenneth Crouch of Charlotte, NC and Bobby Freeman of Maryland. Aunts Juanita Riley, Naomi Cameron, Lauretta Brooks, Thessalonia Brown, Eloise Edwards, and Louise Brothers. As well as an uncle, RJ (Russell Jr.). A host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She also leaves to cherish her memory, best friend Minnie Crite.
