IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edith Mildred
Houston Harris
June 21, 2025
Mrs. Edith Mildred Houston Harris, 92, of Charlotte, NC, departed this life on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Novant Main.
She was the daughter of Gray and Gertrude Houston.
Edith was born in Mineral Springs, Union County, NC and attended Western Union High School and Johnson C. Smith University. Early in life, Edith was a regular church goer, sometimes walking over a mile to church as a child. Soon after moving to Charlotte, Edith joined St. Paul Baptist Church, whose pastor was Reverend James F. Wertz at the time. Edith later joined the missionaries as well as the gospel hymn choir, which she loved dearly. And when her health prevented her from attending church in person, Edith learned to use her iPad for live streaming the service, which she did every Sunday.
Edith was an accomplished cook and loved to entertain the family, surprising them with new and delicious concoctions. She was also an avid gardener and planted a large vegetable garden each year, whose harvest she shared with her neighbors and family. Edith had a strong work ethic and loved staying busy, and during her last week with us, she was helping her daughters plan several home renovations.
Mrs. Edith Mildred Houston Harris was preceded in death by her husband, George Lee Grant Harris, sisters Bernice Barrett, Martha Williams, Mary Bell Barrett, and Ruth Harris, and brothers Thomas Houston, David Hugh Houston, John Henry Houston, and William Roosevelt Houston. She leaves to cherish fond memories her daughters, April and Chanya Harris; her sisters Virginia Grier and Novella Lunn (Robert); and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
