Obituary

Edith Jane Stewart Reid, daughter of the late Franklin A. and Nora G. Stewart, was born in Concord, North Carolina on October 2, 1928. Affectionately called Mama Jane, Big Jane, Jane 1, Granny, and Gan Gan, Ms. Reid peacefully entered eternal rest on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at her home, with loved ones by her side.

At an early age, she joined Zion Hill A.M.E. Zion Church in Concord, North Carolina. After marriage, she became a member of Seventh Street Presbyterian Church in Charlotte where she served as a deacon, pianist, and director of Bible School. She later joined Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church where she served as class leader and pianist. After leaving Little Rock, she joined Memorial Presbyterian Church, then returned to First United Presbyterian Church, home where she served as a member of the Altar Flower Guild and counter.

Ms. Reid her early education at Logan School in Concord, NC. She received her BA Degree at Barber Scotia College and her master's degree from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Her professional career included service as teacher at Rollins Elementary School in Mt. Holly, NC., as Reading Specialist at J. Mason Smith, Jr. High School and South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC where she was honored as a "Teacher of the Year". She worked in adult education at West Mecklenburg High School through Piedmont Community College and teacher and tutor with Upward Bound at Johnson C. Smith University. She was recently honored by the City of Mt. Holly for her service at Rollins Elementary and received the Keys to the City and resolution. Her memberships included NEA/NCEA, AARP, NAACP, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Helping Hand Literacy, and Arts Club, Priscilla Literacy, and Arts Club. She was owner of Elegant Affairs specializing in silk floral arrangements.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Reid was preceded in death by her brother, Franklin A. Stewart, Jr. and her sister, Alice Martha Stewart.

Left to cherish many loving memories are her children, Jane Reid Stratford, Alice Paulette Reid Spruill, Paul Lawrence Reid, Jr. (Laura); grandchildren, John Spruill III (Sylvia), Allison Spruill, Eric and Ryan Reid; great-grandchildren Elijah and Olivia Jane Spruill; niece, Ann Stewart Solomon (Pat) and family; special cousins, Mrs. Sarah Blackwelder, Mrs. Phyllis W. Sanders, and family; cousins, and the entire surviving family to Gertrude Simmons Clayburn. She also leaves a large extended family to include her "other son", Maurice Hinton; other loved ones, Edward Harris, Edward Smith, Queen Justice, Mary and Burt Bradshaw, Gail Farmer, Clement Bowman, Jesca Yiskah EL, Rumeal Ferguson, Mrs. Laura Henderson; and special friends, Edith Delaine, Dorothy Allison, Gayle Dixon, Abigail Flanders, Joyetta Henderson, Joann Antrum, Mattie Williams and Jannelle Reid; and the entire FUPC Family.
