Eugene Duane Butler, Jr. was born February 1, 1954 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Hezekiah Eugene Butler and Azalea Eleanor Gist.  He moved to Washington, DC when he was still a child.  Eugene was known in DC as "Jump" and to his family as "Punchy".  While in middle school "Punchy" became a Civil Air Patrol Cadet and started developing his musical talents.  In his youth, he worked for his uncle, Samuel Butler, Sr. at Sam Butler and Sons Funeral Home.  Punchy was also a member of the Boy Scouts and Explorers Troop 515.  He attended McKinley Technical High School in Washington, DC where he continued to be a cadet and played drums in the high school band as well as a number of local bands.  He formed a band of friends and associates named the Emanons that performed in DC at the Shakespearean Lounge, Jewish Community Center, The Rebel Room, Moore's Love and Peace, Carrs Beach and other venues.   He was an officer for several years with the Federal Protective Service in Washington, DC.

After high school, he attended Florida A & M University (FAMU) where he pledged Upsilon Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. In the 1980's he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina and became a successful tax accountant and established his own company Butler's Diversified Services for more than 15 years. He became a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and wrote insurance and securities as a District Deputy to the Supreme Court of the Independent Order of Foresters.  Eugene not only loved to play music but enjoyed all gentries of music especially jazz.
