Frances Cunningham Grier, 93 of Charlotte, transitioned peacefully to her heavenly home on May 5, 2020. She was born on January 9, 1927 to the late Paul and Eunice Cunningham in Charlotte, NC.  Frances had one sister, Patricia Baxter and one brother, Frank Cunningham; both preceded her in death.

Frances was happily married to Thomas J. Grier (T.J) for 59 years.  To this union was born five children: Geraldine Phifer, Frederick Grier, Marion Leon Grier, Wayne Grier and Thomas Jerome Grier. Sons Marion, Wayne, and Thomas preceded her in death.

Frances joined Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church shortly after marriage to T.J. and served in many capacities.  She sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.  However, her greatest joy and memories shared were the days she served on the Usher Board where she served faithfully for over 25 years.  One of her favorite verses was " I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked." Psalm 84:10

Love of family perfectly described her.  She could be found in her earlier years traveling to take care of grandchildren all over the country; many times she could be found taking care of grandchildren and other family in Charlotte, NC.  Even as she got into her 90's, she was being helped into the bleachers to cheer grandchildren on at a basketball game and stand on the sidelines at a soccer game or clap at graduation activities.  She loved her family!  And by the way, she was feisty, she wore her caps and you knew what was on her mind.

Frances leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Geraldine Phifer (Melvin); son, Frederick Grier; six grandchildren, Roderick Phifer, Josselyn Cash, Melvin (Jay) Phifer, Tiga Camps, Brion Grier and Amber Grier; nineteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; special cousin, Gwendolyn Miller; sister-in-law, Rosa Cunningham; nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends.  Longevity runs in the Cunningham family.  She also leaves dear cousins Lonnie Cunningham (93) of Pittsburgh, PA and Frank Cunningham (96) of Charlotte, NC to cherish her memory.
