Mr. Frank Cunningham, 97, of Charlotte, transitioned peacefully to be with the Lord on January 6, 2021. Frank was born on July 25, 1923 to the late Maggie Cunningham and the late Hattie (Gaston) and Mitt Cunningham in Fort Lawn, South Carolina. As the patriarch of our family he was affectionately called Dad, Daddy and Granddaddy.
He graduated from Second Ward High School in Charlotte and in 1945 enlisted in the United States Army where he served in World War II in the Philippines, receiving the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and WWII Victory Medal. Upon returning home, he graduated in 1952 from Carver College in Charlotte with a degree in business management. The South was still segregated during this time and despite his military service and being highly educated, Frank did not obtain a white-collar job until the age of 47. He was a hard worker and provided for his family, working at Southern Bakery in Charlotte for 29 years. He never gave up on his dreams and persevered until he achieved his life-long goal of becoming an accountant. In 1970, Frank was hired at General Electric where he worked until retirement.
Frank was married to the love of his life, Frances Clark, for 65 years and three daughters were born from their union. He was a longtime member of East Stonewall AME Zion Church in Charlotte. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching baseball, especially his favorite team the Atlanta Braves. Frank was a true family man; he loved cooking, playing with and caring for his children and grandchildren.
Frank leaves to cherish his memory three loving daughters, Carolyn (Cunningham) Lee, Evelyn Cunningham and Brenda (Marion, Sr.) Boyce all of Charlotte; grandsons Markis Lee and Marion (Erika) Boyce, Jr. of Charlotte and Eric (Kandis) Watson of Lithonia, Georgia; granddaughters Crystal (Felix) Smith of Anderson, South Carolina and Chakita Wright of Charlotte; great-grandsons Alex Smith, Eben Wright, Jonathan Watson and Marion Boyce, III; great-granddaughters Camille (Steve) Johnson, Megan Lee, Erika Wright and Hannah Watson; brother-in-laws Eugene (Diane) Whitaker and James Horace Whitaker both of Charlotte; special cousin Lonnie Cunningham, 94, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; special friend Ms. Earlene Massey of Charlotte and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and family dog Legend Tahj who enjoyed sitting at his feet. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sister Estelle (Cunningham) McFadden and brother James "Cuffie" Cunningham, great-granddaughter baby Kayla Watson and cousin Frances (Cunningham) Grier, 92, who recently passed away.
