Obituary

Mr. Frank Nelson Hubbard, 73 of Charlotte, passed away on Thursday January 9, 2020 at Charlotte Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Frank was a West Charlotte Senior High School and Morehouse College football player. He avidly watched NFL and NBA games with the same passion that he exuded on the field. However his love for sports activities only complemented his interest in words, books, math, and music. He won a spelling bee in elementary school, was inducted into the honor society, played the flute, trumpet, and piano, and earned a college scholarship. He was active in scouting at an early age and earned many badges to reflect his interest.

Born September 7, in 1946, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Hubbard, he was an only child that enjoyed all of the love and benefits that status provides. Although an only child, he was reared in a big family of parent siblings and cousins that stretched from Charlotte, to Deep Creek, North Carolina and Greenwood, South Carolina. He was known to family as "Big Frank", which reflected his love for soul food and his mama and maternal grandmother's culinary skills. He worked summers and often Sunday's in his "Aunt Eve's" and "Uncle Cleve's" café, The Friendly Spot, which was located in the Greenville community. The guests of the café and residents of the close community enjoyed their relationships with "Big Frank".

Cherishing memories are his wife, Margaret Graham Hubbard, mother-in-law, Prudence Graham Duncan, (Columbus, Ohio), his loving daughter Amy Smith Barber, (Hinesville, SC), four grandchildren, an uncle, Joe Harrison Fortune, (Willingboro, NJ) many cousins, and friends.

A special tribute selected by his daughter Amy:

God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide; and though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
