Reflection of Life

Franklin Norris Dowdy Sr.

Franklin Norris Dowdy Sr. passed away on July 8, 2021 at the age of 79, at his residence in Concord, North Carolina surrounded by loved ones. His battle with cancer in recent years showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, Franklin came out a hero and stayed strong until the end.

Franklin was born January 22, 1942 in Carthage, North Carolina to Charlie and Louise Caddell Dowdy. He graduated from Pinckney High School in Carthage in 1959. Upon graduating from high school, he relocated to New Jersey where he met and married his first wife Sherry Reddick. Franklin and Sherry had three children, Franklin, Lisa, and Edward Dowdy. They relocated to Aliquippa, Pennsylvania in 1968 where he resided for about 18 years. Around June 1989, he relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina where he would remarry twice, once to Annie Powell and finally to Joyce Featherson. Franklin worked for the City of Charlotte from September 27, 1989 to January 1, 2009 as a Pavement Crew Equipment Operator and retired with over 19 years of service. Franklin's last relocation was to Concord, North Carolina in 2018.

His hobbies included listening to music, bowling, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends. His life was a living example of a favorite bible verse, Ephesians 4:32 – "And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ".

Franklin is survived by his two daughters, Lisa Jones of Triangle, Virginia, Annette Anderson of Charlotte, North Carolina; five sons, Franklin Dowdy Jr., Montclair Powell, Christopher Powell, Richard Powell all of Charlotte, North Carolina and Burton Powell of District Heights, Maryland; his sisters Flora Dowdy-Mitchell, Marie Dowdy, Geraldine Dowdy, and Eleanor Dowdy all of Charlotte, North Carolina; his brother Anthony Dowdy of Concord, North Carolina; 12 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Franklin was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Louise Dowdy; wives Annie Powell Dowdy and Joyce Featherson Dowdy; son Edward Dowdy; brother Charles Dowdy; 2 sisters Elaine Dowdy-Jackson and Cleo McNeil; grandchildren Tony Jones Jr. and Desiree Amuria Jones.
