Obituary

Mr. Freddie Stewart Jr., 71, of Charlotte, NC, departed this life on Monday, June 9, 2025 at CaroMont Regional Hospital in Gastonia.

Freddie Stewart, Jr., also known as Fred or Skye, was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 9, 1953, to the late Louise Hart Stewart and Freddie Stewart, Sr.  He departed this life on June 9, 2025, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, North Carolina.

Freddie attended Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and was a graduate of Independence High School, Class of 1971.  Following graduation, he worked for BASF and later with several other construction related companies over the years before becoming medically disabled.  In spite of his chronic illness, Freddie fought bravely to survive life's obstacles and challenges.  He endured the pains and struggles and has now won his Victory.

With the exception of about two years as an infant when his family lived in New York, Freddie was a native Charlottean and an avid sports fan.  His favorite teams were the Carolina Panthers for football, the Charlotte Hornets for basketball and Carolina for college basketball.  He also enjoyed playing three card Bingo, solving Word Find puzzles, and watching back-to-back episodes of Gunsmoke.  One of his favorite sweet snacks was "Nerds," either the loose singles or the clusters.  He would open the pack, throw back his head and toss a few into his mouth.  When asked if they were good, he would laugh and say with a smile, "Yep, you just hold them in your mouth and let them melt."

Freddie will be fondly remembered for his tall stature, standing at 6 feet 6 inches, his quiet, gentle manner and his warm smile.  In addition to his parents, Freddie was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Maybell Williams Hart and James Coy Hart, Sr.; and two sisters, Betty Jean Stewart and Janice Stewart.

He is survived by his sister, Cassandra Turner and her husband, Lem; two nieces, Jadda and Jessica Atkinson, all of Charlotte, NC; aunts, Dorothy Johnson of Fayetteville, GA, Peggy Howey (Joe) and Wilhelmina Hart of Charlotte, NC; uncles, Atty. James Hart and Bobby Hart (Queen) of Charlotte, NC, and Dr. Charles Hart (Dr. Shirley) of Chesapeake, VA; cousins and friends.
