Obituary
Geraldine "affectionately known as Gerry" Smith passed away peacefully at the loving home of her nephew, Robert (who was like a son) and his wife, Regina on Sunday, April 25, 2021 in Charlotte, North Carolina at the distinguished age of 93.
Gerry was born Geraldine Gill on March 24, 1928 in Charlotte, North Carolina where she graduated from Second Ward High School. She was a graduate of Howard University in Washington DC where she received a degree in Education and Dentistry and joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She later matriculated at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts where she earned her Master's degree.
Because of her passion for knowledge and love of education, Gerry also interned at West Virginia State University. This is where she met the love of her life, Willie P. Smith, who at the time was an ROTC student at WVSU. For those who knew him well, he was better known as Smitty. Gerry and Smitty traveled the world and made many lifelong friends as he served in the United States Army. After 20 years of service and his retirement, they settled in Lexington, Massachusetts where they raised two children, Allison and David. Lexington was also where Gerry started and managed her successful recruitment agency – Smith Gill Associates.
The things that gave Gerry joy was helping others and sharing in their happiness. She spent so much of her life being of service to others and all who knew her felt they were a part of her family because of the way she treated them. Travelling to Hawaii was also one of her many joys and she made that trip often!
Gerry was preceded in death by her husband Lt. Colonel Willie P. Smith; her mother Ada Gill; daughter Allison Smith and brother Thomas Gill. She is survived by her son David Smith, nephews Willie (Mary) Gill, Charles (Brenda) Gill and Robert (Regina) Gill all of Charlotte; special niece Genise (Billy) Smith-Watkins of Charlotte; cousins Mattie Kluttz and Gertrude Parler of Charlotte; special friend Augusta Edwards (her little girl), in-laws and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.
Gerry will be reposed in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia with the love of her life, Willie P. Smith.
