Harold Dewey Kanipes, Jr., 74, was born in Burke County, North Carolina on February 4, 1941 to the late Harold D. and Eloise Kanipe, Sr. He stepped into his heavenly home on August 12, 2015. Harold grew up in Morganton, NC, an only child, and graduated from Olive Hill High School in 1960. He continued his education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, NC earning a Bachelors of Science Degree in Chemistry. He earned a Masters of Education Degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He began his career as a teacher at Sterling High School while still in college. He retired after 30 years with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools where he taught Earth and Physical Science at Northwest Junior High, Eastway Junior High, Hawthorne Junior High and Ransom Middle School. After retirement in 1995, his passion for teaching led him to teach Driver's Education with Jordan Driving School. He was a member of the North Carolina Teachers Association and the National Education Association (NEA). Harold grew up as an active member of Willow Tree AME Church in Morganton, NC and after his marriage moved to Charlotte, NC where he joined Greater Bethel AME Church. At Greater Bethel, he gave freely of his time and talents where he served as a Trustee, Usher, Missionary, Member of the Lay Organization, Member of the Male Chorus, Member of the Sons of Allen, Sunday School Treasurer and Teacher and member of the Finance Committee. He was also honored as Man of the Year (1993) and Father of the Year (1988-1989). On July 31, 1966, he married Maggie Imogene Hines. They were happily married for 49 years. It is only fitting that Maggie was by his side in his final moments. The bonds created by the joining of their families will last for generations. Committed to helping others, Harold was a lifetime blood donor and it was his desire to be an organ donor so that he could provide a quality of life for others. He used his many talents to help others which included his skills as a mechanic, handyman and avid gardener. Many persons sought his sound advice and guidance. He was a member of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity and Los Bravos, Inc. Left with precious memories are his wife Maggie; four children, Margaret Kanipes Spinks (Burley), Marjorie Denise Kanipes, Marian Marie Martinez (Alfonso) and Harold Avery Kanipes; and three grandchildren, Journey, Joshua and John D. He is also survived by one special aunt, Bertha M. Avery; four goddaughters, Stephanie Watson, Melissa Jones, Jennifer Kennedy and Sabrina Smith; four sisters-in-law, Helen Archie, Edith Hairston (Vance), Brenda Allen (Michael) and Deborah Hines; one brother-in-law, Kenneth Hines; nine nephews, two nieces and a host of cousins and friends. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, August 18, 2015, at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church, 5232 The Plaza, Charlotte, NC. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm. Interment will be at Willow Tree AME Church, Morganton, NC on August 20, 2015. Memorials may be sent to Harold D.
