Obituary

On Tuesday, April 21, 2020, Hattie Belle Brevard (Hardin) passed away peacefully with her two sons by her side. Hattie was born on November 16th, 1949 to the late James and Fannie Hardin in Gastonia, NC. She was the second oldest of six children. She was preceded in death by her brother Harry and sister Twana.

"Hattie Belle" as she was affectionately referred to, was educated in the Gaston County schools where she was a graduate of Frank L. Ashley High School in 1967. Hattie continued her education at Livingstone College, a private Historically Black College in Salisbury, North Carolina. With a passion for education, Hattie was the first member of her family to graduate from college with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education (1971). Hattie began her teaching career in Maiden, NC where she taught in the Elementary schools and thoroughly enjoyed teaching students how to read and write.

In the late 1970s, Hattie moved to Charlotte, NC where she furthered her teaching career in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System teaching students for over 40 years. She later retired from CMS where she received various accolades and recognitions after having an impact on the lives of so many students.

In 1984, Hattie was united in marriage to King S. Brevard Jr. and from their union had two sons, Kevin and Kristopher.  Hattie loved to be around family and friends while often enjoying cooking and baking for big family gatherings, especially at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. Hattie had a talent for making jewelry and would create unique pieces that she often would give away to different family and friends. She also enjoyed traveling. One of Hattie's wishes was to take a cruise with her two sons for her 70 th birthday. This wish came true last November where she was able to take a cruise with her sons and other family members to celebrate her 70 th birthday. Most importantly, Hattie loved God and loved to read her bible daily. She found Psalms to be one of her favorite books to read from and would often quote scripture from there such as Psalm 23. Hattie found it important to pray for her family and friends and would offer a word of encouragement, an affirmation of love, or a simple reassurance of faith any chance she could.

Hattie was a devoted family member and especially loved spending time with her two grandsons, Kenneth and Kevin Jr. where you would frequently hear her talk about them and refer to them as her "Grandma's babies".  She genuinely enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends and would look forward to the next opportunity to spend time with those she so cared about.

Her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. She is survived by: Husband—King S. Brevard Jr.; Two Sons–Kevin Brevard Sr. (Stephanie) Kristopher Brevard (Kanisha); Two grandsons—Kenneth Brevard and Kevin Brevard Jr.; One sister—Jackie Hardin; Two Brothers—James Hardin (Corrine) and Larry Hardin. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives, and friends.
