Helen Beatrice Brown, known affectionately as "Maw" and "Polly", peacefully left this world on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at the Citadel in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was born October 29, 1930, to the late Katie Dimery and Henry Brown, in Abbottsburg, North Carolina.
Helen moved to Charlotte and worked at the Veteran's Grill in the early 1950's. In the 1960's, she stayed with her same employer and was an important part of opening the original Busy Bee Market on Beatties Ford Road. In 1977, Helen started to manage the Busy Bee Carry Out and sealed her role as one of the most memorable members of Charlotte's Historic Westside community. Even until her death, people would run into her and remember her for her famous fish sandwich.
Her dedication to her job is not surpassed by her dedication to her church, Greater Gethsemane A.M.E. Zion Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. A proud member since 1972, she served in her Missionary Circle, Sunday School and on the Stewardess Board.
Preceding her in death were her beloved daughters, Dellis Marie Smith Cassell and Phyllis Ann Brown Biscoe; six brothers, Henry Brown Jr., Carven Brown, Jack Brown, Aaron Brown, Preston Brown and James Albert Brown; and three sisters, Agnes Brown, Josephine Brown and Katie Bell McDuffie.
She leaves here to cherish her memories her grandson, Jamar D. Cassell; sister, Lois Campbell; special friends, Janet Steele, Elnora Hairston, Sharon McIllwayne, Maggie Morrow, Thelma Cunningham and "adopted daughter", Angie Drakeford; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Helen was a friend to many and family to most. She will be remembered for her kindness, giving spirit and faithfulness to the Lord.
