Obituary

Mrs. Henrietta Alford McClain, daughter of the late Connie
Brockington Alford and the late Corinzer R. Alford Sr., was born in
Florence, South Carolina on May 29, 1923. She departed this life on
Wednesday, May 10, 2023, nineteen days before her 100th birthday at
her residence in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Jacob McClain, of Florence, South Carolina,
and her daughter, Jacqueline McClain Harmon of Charlotte.

Mrs. McClain graduated from the former Torrence-Lytle High
School in Huntersville, North Carolina, and from Johnson C. Smith
University in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1946. While at Smith, she
became a charter member of the Gamma Delta Chapter of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority in 1944, and went on to help charter the
Epsilon Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in
Florence, South Carolina in 1952.

Mrs. McClain was a dedicated teacher for more than 30 years,
teaching in Lake View, South Carolina, and at Eastway and
Northwest Junior High Schools in Charlotte before retiring from
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in 1988.

She was a devoted member of New Emmanuel Congregational
United Church of Christ where she served as Deaconess. She was
forever grateful to the church for its kindness and home ministry to
her daughter Jacqueline when Multiple Sclerosis made it impossible
for Jackie to attend services.

Mrs. McClain was a talented seamstress, an avid reader, and
enjoyed making quilts and clothes for her family and friends. She
loved to serve and volunteered with Friendship Trays' Meals on
Wheels program to deliver food to people in need. She also enjoyed
crossword and picture puzzles, playing bingo, and traveling all over
the world, all of which she did right up until the end of her life. She
leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and kindness that touched so
many in the community.

Left to cherish her memories are: one grandson, Henry Harmon,
III; five sisters, Constance Talford of Decatur, Georgia, Wilma Boyd of
Fort Worth, Texas, Patricia Williams (Kirk) of Washington, D.C.,
Delores Reid and Lucille Holtzclaw (Walter) both of Charlotte, NC;
one maternal first cousin Jerry James of Coatesville, Pennsylvania
and a host of nieces, nephews, other cousins, and friends.
