Obituary

Mrs. Heppie Jones Davis, 92, of Charlotte, NC, departed this life on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Novant Presbyterian Main.  She was the daughter of the late Ellis Jones and Lonnie Caretha Pruitt Strickland Jones.  Heppie was born in Seneca, SC, on May 4, 1933.  She was married to Rev. Tommy G. Davis; he preceded her in death in 1990. She was also predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Bernice E. Jones Foster and Marshall Foster of Seneca, SC.

Heppie was a graduate of the Oconee County Training School in Seneca. After high school, she attended Paine College in Augusta, GA. She then transferred to South Carolina State College (now University) where she earned a B.A. in Education. She began her teaching career as a home economics teacher at New Deal High School in Starr, SC.  Early in her marriage, she and her husband lived in Springfield, MA, where they both taught in the public schools until Rev. Davis entered the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, GA. During that time, Mrs. Davis worked with special education students. After they relocated to North Carolina, Mrs. Davis taught in the public schools of Gaston County, NC.  She retired from teaching at North Gaston High School in 1998. She continued to show her love of youth and building a brighter future for everyone by occasionally serving as a substitute teacher.

While her husband was pastor, Mrs. Davis served as First Lady of Third Street Presbyterian Church in Gastonia and later as First Lady of Shiloh Institutional Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC.  She was a member of the Ministers' Wives group and enjoyed participating in their activities. She was a longtime member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC, where she was a Deaconess and a member of the Women's Missionary Society. She was an active member of the Eastern Star Rachel Chapter #19 for as long as her health permitted.  She was a member of the Stratford Richardson Active Adult Program.

Mrs. Davis was an excellent seamstress who made beautiful creations for family and friends. She had a great sense of humor; she was kind and thoughtful. She loved being a sharp dresser! She enjoyed gardening, and she was a great cook who delighted her family with delicious meals and specialty dishes. Her grandchildren were the joys of her life. She loved being their "Grammy" and spending time with them.

Most importantly, Mrs. Davis was a devoted mother and grandmother and a loving presence for all of her extended family. She and Rev. Davis were the parents of two sons whom they leave with cherished memories, Derrick Davis (Ogechi) and Daryl Davis; granddaughters, Quinn and Sydnie Davis, all of Charlotte, NC; sister, Mary Ann Jones of Seneca, SC; niece, Sandra Parker (Michael) of Seneca, SC; nephew, Marshall Eric Foster (Lisa) of Clemson, SC; great-nieces, Bryanna Parker and Alanda Parker of New York, NY, Caliyah Parker of Seneca, SC, and Callan Foster of Clemson, SC; and great-nephew Kohl Foster of Clemson, SC.
