Obituary

Mr. Herbert Lowery Davis, (Herb), 73 of Charlotte, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, February 11, 2021. Herb Davis was born on July 29, 1947 to Edward and Gertrude Davis.  Herb grew up in Pineville, North Carolina with his brothers and sisters.  He attended Sterling Elementary School.  He graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in 1965.

He attended Warren Wilson College on a full basketball scholarship.  He graduated in 1969 with a degree in history.  While at Warren Wilson he met his wife, Mary Richardson, whom he married in 1970.

Herb taught in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system for 30 years starting at Quail Hollow Junior High.  He returned to his alma mater, South Mecklenburg, in 1977 where he taught US History and coached boy's basketball.  He later became Athletic Director.

Herb had many passions and hobbies that kept him engaged and occupied.  His passion for basketball continued as he competed in a senior basketball league.  He was an avid gardener.  He was a prolofic scrabble player.  Herb loved to read.  He found a home in the dance community with the Charlotte Purple Steppers, where he was a life time member.

Herb was a father, friend coach, and mentor to many.  He will be remembered fondly and missed.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and his loving wife of 32 years; brothers, Richard, Alfred, and Harry; sisters, Bobbie, Kate, and Dorothy.

Leaving to cherish his memories; his children, Julie, Jonathan (Tamika), and Jeremy (Brittany); grandchildren, Amina, Zhkalyn, Runey, and Rhye; sisters, Nancy, Peggy (Edward), and Margaret; brothers, Edward, Hubert, and Walter.
