Mr. Herman Grier, 81 of Charlotte, departed this earthly life on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at Levine & Dickson at Aldersgate with his family at his bedside.  He was the son of the late Joseph Grier and Martha G. Grier and was born in Mecklenburg County in the Steele Creek community.

Herman attended Rosenwald School and graduated from Sterling High School in Pineville, North Carolina.  Herman was employed by Terrell (Comer) Machine Company for 42 years and retired in 2011.

"PaPa," as he was so affectionately called, was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  He was also a caring uncle, brother-in-law and a loyal neighbor and friend.

At an early age, Herman joined McClintock Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.  He was united in holy matrimony to Ellie Neal Grier on March 13, 1963; they were blessed with on child, Rodney Grier.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his three brothers, Woodrow, Joseph, Odell and one sister, Annie Lois Sings.

He enjoyed gardening, traveling and having daily breakfast with retired friends.  Herman Grier was co-founder and former athletic director of the Freedom Drive Broncos.  He continuously gave back by volunteering his time, dedication, efforts and financial assistance within the organization by enhancing the opportunities for the children of the community.

Herman leaves many beautiful memories of unconditional love an deep devotion of his wife of 57 years, Ellie Neal Grier; son, Rodney (Tracey) Grier of Johns Creek, Georgia; five grandchildren, Travis (MyKeia) Neal, Ryale Grier, Daquez Crawford, Deszerae Crawford and Raquel Grier; five great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Lillian C. Grier of Huntersville, NC, Lafredda (Issac) Wallace of Charlotte, NC and Paulette (Kenneth) Reid of White Plains, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
