Mrs. Ida Katherine Brown, 94, of Charlotte, NC, departed this life on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at her residence.
Ida Katherine Brown, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2024, surrounded by her family at the home of her daughter, Windy Vyette Bellamy.
Born on September 9, 1929, in Huntersville, NC. Ida was the second of nine children born to the late Adrain and Nellie Henderson Berry. She grew up in Huntersville and graduated with the Class of 1948 from Huntersville Negro High School. Ida held her alma mater close to her heart, often reminiscing about the teachers and principal who provided words of wisdom and encouragement. She was an active member of the Torrence-Lytle Alumnae Association and eagerly anticipated attending the annual Blue and Gold Ball.
After dedicating twenty-five years of service to Asbury Nursing Home, Ida retired and devoted herself to caring for her husband until his passing in December 1994.
Ida's faith journey began at an early age when she attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church and the House of Prayer for All People in Huntersville. Later, she joined University Park Baptist Church, now known as The Park Church, where she found great joy and spiritual nourishment. Ida cherished "her" pastor and often remarked that Bishop Alexander seemed to look directly at her during each Sunday service she attended. Her 54 years of faithful membership at The Park Church were marked by her involvement in Missionary Group #6, Adult Sunday School, the Pacesetter Ministry, and her contributions in the church kitchen. She was one of the cherished "Supremes," known for her delicious and cheesy macaroni and cheese, prepared for special occasions.
Ida was an exceptional cook, known for her hospitality and culinary skills. Her macaroni and cheese, green beans, pinto beans, sweet potato pies, fried apple pies, peach cobbler, red velvet cake, pound cake, and fresh coconut cake at Christmas will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of enjoying them.
Affectionately known as "Mom," "Mama," "Kat," "Katherine," "Aunt Kat," and "Ida K.," she was a woman of quiet strength, deep faith, and unwavering kindness. Her gentle manner, soft voice, and sweet spirit will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved her.
Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Brown, Sr.; son, Charles Edward Brown, Jr.; brother, Joseph Berry; sisters, Mary Ann Barringer, Edna Barringer, Lucy Ross, Dora Davis and Katie McNeely.
She leaves to cherish her memories, daughters, Gwendolyn B. Johnson (Artis), Donna S. Washington (Joseph), Windy Y. Bellamy (Michael); son, Stacy M. Brown; ten grandchildren, twenty-one great-grand-children, three great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
