Inez Bernice
Johnson
d. Jun 2, 2026
Inez Bernice Johnson, 78, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.
Inez Bernice "Bay" Johnson, 78, of Charlotte, NC, peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, surrounded by love at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center. She was the daughter of George Arthur and Juanita Nixon McLean who preceded her in death. Inez was a devoted mother, a doting grandmother and great-grandmother, a cherished sister, and a faithful servant of God. Inez lived a life rooted in love, family, and unwavering faith.
From the very beginning, family was the cornerstone of Inez’s world. Born into a vibrant and loving household, she was a treasured sister among ten siblings, Mary Hunter, George McLean (deceased), Delores McLean, Marcella Barnette, Jerry McLean, Marcus McLean, Glenda McLean, James McLean and Georgia Vahoua. The strong, unbreakable bonds shared between them shaped her into the compassionate, nurturing woman she became. Today, her legacy of love and unity lives on in them, and who will forever carry her spirit in their hearts.
Inez was married to Russell Johnson, III for 45 years until his passing in March 2019. As a mother, Inez poured boundless love and wisdom into her children, raising them to be her greatest pride and joy. Her legacy continues through her devoted son, Randy (Tomeka), and her beloved daughter, Melissa. Inez’s heart grew even larger with the arrival of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she absolutely adored. She was the proud grandmother of Yazmen and Aimber (children of Randy) and Eli and Mia (children of Melissa). Her joy was multiplied yet again as a great-grandmother to Iris and Cynthia. She also leaves behind her bonus children, Russell, Shakira, and Michael, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends who were blessed to experience her warmth, kindness, and infectious smile.
Above all, Inez was a woman of profound faith. Since childhood, she was a dedicated and faithful member of Gold Hill Baptist Church in Stanley. It was within those sacred walls that her faith was nurtured, her spirit was renewed, and her love for the Lord grew deeper each year. Returning to Gold Hill for her final earthly service is a beautiful testament to a lifelong journey of devotion, coming full circle in the sanctuary she loved so dearly.
Inez was employed by Rite-Aid (formally Eckerd’s Drugs) for 35 years. There she met many lifelong friends that became family.
Inez’s life was an inspiration, a masterclass in how to love fiercely, give selflessly, and walk faithfully. Though she has stepped into eternity, the warmth of her memory will forever illuminate the lives of everyone who knew and loved her.
