Mrs. Irene Houston, 91 of Charlotte, passed away on June 21, 2016 at Hunter Woods Nursing & Rehab.  Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2016 at Greenville Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.  Visitation will begin at 12 noon until 1:00 p.m.  Mrs. Houston was born March 28, 1925 in Gaston County, NC to the parents of Clafton Kennedy and Lillian Wright.  She attended Second Ward Senior High School.  After high school, she moved to Richmond, Virginia where she began training as a welder at the Virginia Ship Yard.  After many years of working the ship yard, the family moved to Charlotte, NC where she raised three beautiful children, daughters, Deloris and Johnnie Mae and son, Bretram, who preceded her in death.  Irene attended Greenville Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church for many years.  She was an usher and worked with the Missionary Department.  She loved and cared for many people and she also loved to travel to many different places.  She loved to talk and "never met a stranger."  She was a loving person.  Irene is survived by two daughters, Deloris Armstrong and Johnnie Mae Baker; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and a host of other relatives and friends.
