Irie Lee McFarlan Chapman James affectionately known as "Newt", was born on September 11, 1932, to the late Daniel and Emma McFarlan, in Chesterfield, SC. She departed this life on July 15, 2022, at Levine Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, North Carolina. Irie Lee was the second oldest of seven children. Danzie, Billie, Baby Snook, Dan, Tyrone, and Issac McFarlan all of whom proceeded her in death with the exception of Dan (Edith) McFarlan.

Irie Lee completed her secondary education in Chesterfield, South Carolina. She later moved to Charlotte, NC in 1955. It was here that she retired from Lance, after sixteen years. Irie Lee later became an entrepreneur, who owned multiple businesses and properties.

Irie Lee was a dedicated mother to her eight children. She was an avid gardener, cook, seamstress, and mechanic. Irie Lee also loved fishing in her spare time. She was a dedicated and founding member of the True Light Gospel Church of Christ, where she was also a Mother of the church.

Irie Lee leaves to cherish her memory Larry (Jacqueline) McFarlan, Lerone Chapman, Sandra Crawford, Pamela (George) Fuller, Rickey (Renee) Chapman, Mickey Chapman, Randelin Martin, and Darryl Chapman, all of Charlotte, NC. She also leaves to cherish her memory eighteen grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, a host of great-great grandchildren , nieces, and nephews.
