Obituary

Ms. Jacqueline Anita Pharr, 90 of Charlotte, passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2021 at Novant Presbyterian Hospital.  She was one of six children from the union of the late Sidney M. Pharr and Gladys Graves Pharr, born on July 18, 1931.  She was the granddaughter of the late Dr. Walter Henry Graves and Lillian Cruz Graves.  Jacqueline was preceded in death by her siblings: Edwynna Flowers, Lillian Thompson, Peggy Steward, Emmette (Frank) Pharr and Doris Pharr.

To her, "family" was the tie that binds.  She worked diligently to ensure that her family was safe, happy, educated and loved.  She became a mentor, providing skills and resources to family members, students, friends and co-workers.  She was affectionately known as Jackie, Aunt Jackie, Miss Jackie and Big Jackie.  Her lovable, charming mannerism and respect, as well as her friendship and concern for the welfare of others were encouraging.

Jackie's educational journal began at Isabella Wyche Elementary School, then on to Second Ward, graduating salutatorian of the class of 1949.    She later graduated from Johnson C. Smith University with a Bachelor of Science Degree.  She earned her Master's Degree in Science Education from Columbia University, New York and did further studies at Winston-Salem State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Included also in her many accomplishments was induction into Phi Delta Kappa, honored as a Charlotte Post Outstanding Educator and listed in Who's Who in America.

Her church membership was Simpson-Gillespie United Methodist where she sang in the choir from youth through adulthood.  She was a member of the Pastor's Parish Committee and the Board of Christian Education.  She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  She taught at Mecklenburg College (Central Piedmont) and retired from West Charlotte High in 1985. At West Charlotte, she serviced in many capacities, some of which were Chairperson of the Science Department, Chairperson of Graduation and Chairperson of Southern Association Accreditation Committee.

She leaves to mourn nieces, Sharon Ledbetter of Annapolis, MD, Patricia Thompson of Stone Mountain, GA, Gladys Taylor, Emille Pharr, Jacqueline Pharr-Berry, Robin Pharr-Flood of Charlotte, NC; nephews, Drexel Steward (Avis) of Las Vegas, NV and Dr. Emmett Steward (Shantae) of Charlotte, NC; sister-in-law, Eunice Pharr, cousins, William McMillan (Delorise), Eugene Pharr (Margaret); great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nephews and -nieces, as well as extended family and friends.
