Obituary

James Arthur Dixon was born August 19, 1929 in Wilson North Carolina. He gained his wings on October 16, 2019. He was the oldest of two sons of the late Astor and Minnie Lee Dixon. He graduated from West Virginia State University with a BS degree in Business Administration. He was first lieutenant in the US Army and served in the Korean War 1954-1956. Following his military service, he was employed as a salesman for American Tobacco Company which he talked about until this day. He then worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.  James was a Deputy Sheriff with the Mecklenburg County Police Department from 1986 to 1993 when he retired.

In 1961, he married the former Patricia Stroud; the classic Omega-Delta Union! From this union, they had two beautiful daughter, Monique Elizabeth & Patrice Renee. They were the "apple of his eye", and at times, the "thorn in his side". With his unconditional love, he was always there for them, even when he replied "ask your mama".  James and Patricia's union remained strong. They were often found holding hands as he serenaded her with his original ditties.

Dixon was a dedicated member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church serving as Assistant Treasurer of the men's council, an usher, and a member of the Presbyterian Men. He was a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.(Pi Phi '58) for more than 60 years. Earlier this year, brother Dixon was the first honoree in the Pi Phi chapter's Fellowship with a Senior Brother Luncheon. He was extremely grateful, describing it as MAGNIFICENT.

If you knew Dixon, you know that he was a huge sports fan!!! His favorites were America's team, the Dallas Cowboys (and their cheerleaders), and the Duke Blue Devils. Thanks to his commemorative oversized replica of a Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl ring, he was often mistaken as a former member of the team. James also enjoyed personal competitions. He avidly participated with his Dalebrook neighborhood men to see whose lawn looked the best and who was the first to get the flag up on holidays.

Although a man of few words; James let his opinion be known. Sometimes abrupt in his presentations; he would then counter with a joke. He engendered respect and love from all. He loved to be in the driver's seat both literally and figuratively. Whether in the car, at a committee meeting or in the wheelchair; he told you how it should be done. Later in life he could be found parked at the end of the nursing home hallway, "sitting on the block" as he called it; with the ever present cap on his head, watching everyone's moves and issuing orders.

He leaves to celebrate his memory his wife, Patricia, and his  daughters, Monique and Patrice; brother, Richard Dixon; sister-in-law, Tayloria Anderson; brother-in-law, Barron Stroud (Elizabeth); niece, Patricia Anderson Ballard; nephews, Leon Anderson III, (Annette),  Barron Stroud Jr, and Eric Stroud and his chosen family; daughter, Tammy Roseboro Johnson and granddaughter, Breauna Johnson.
