Our hearts are heavy as we share that our beloved James passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at the age of 80.
He was born on August 12, 1945, in Mecklenburg County, and raised in Union County. He was the cherished son of the late Jay B. Alexander and Ruth Matilda Graves.
To those who knew him, James was more than just a husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he was a storyteller, a steady hand, and a source of unconditional love. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome, often through his warm smile, his unforgettable laugh, and the stories he loved to share from his younger days.
James spent much of his life working as a truck driver but later retired from Queen City Appliances where he met many friends. James found joy in handy work, gardening, listening to old school music, and he took an interest in "old school" cars.
In addition to his parents, Jay B. Alexander and Matilda Harrison Graves, James was preceded in death by sisters, Carolyn McGhee, Angelina Anderson, Sybil Stacey, Sylvia Pratt and brothers, Sherman Alexander and Reginald Alexander.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of over 40 years, Gloria Alexander; his children, James Darren Baker (Shana), Mono Baker (Cassandra), Elaine Blount (Darren); bonus children, Ramone Laney, Lakita Laney Perkins (Gerald); siblings, Walter Alexander, Margaret Alexander, Stephen Wilson, all of Charlotte; Larry Wilson (Gail) of Pageland, SC, Laura Ann McClure, Andrew Alexander, Marvin Alexander, Susan Cureton, Maria Graves, Josie Graves, all of Charlotte; sisters, Deborah Alexander, Sharon Alexander-Parks (Kenny), Denise Alexander-Latimore, Jaee Marie Alexander, Diana Alexander, Calvin Alexander, all of Jersey City, NJ; and Clayron Alexander of Jacksonville, NC; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
James was a joy and a blessing to have on this earth. We will miss his voice, his laughter, and his presence every day, but we take comfort in knowing that his love will remain with us always.
